Cameron Burr of Muhlenberg is UECU Player of the Week

Muhlenberg coach Brian Kopetsky says his third baseman, Cameron Burr, “flies under the radar a little bit.”

That won’t be the case much longer. The sophomore was named to the All-Berks team Sunday after batting .409 with an impressive .570 on-base percentage.

He put all his skills on display last week, hitting and pitching the Muhls to the Berks League championship. He went 7-for-12 with six RBIs, five runs scored and three stolen bases during the league playoffs and was the starting and winning pitcher in a semifinal against Exeter. That was more than enough to earn Utilities Employees Credit Union Player of the Week honors.

“He’s the igniter,” Kopetsky said of his leadoff hitter. “He’s the guy that sets the table. He started the season something like 0-for-10; I think he’s batted .500 since. The last three-quarters of the season you can’t get him out.”

Burr reached base three times and scored three runs in the first three innings of Muhlenberg’s 11-3 win over Oley Valley in the BCIAA championship game.

He went 5 1/3 innings on the mound in a 10-7 win over Exeter; he allowed five hits and two earned runs.

Burr is one of the big reasons the Muhls (19-3) are the top seed in the District 3 Class 5A Tournament, which they open Monday night at Gochnauer Field at 7.

“He’s just an amazing kid,” said Muhls first baseman Sam Martinez. “Nothing but hard work from him. Nothing but grit, sweat, flat-out putting everything on the field. It comes from the heart with him.”

Burr leads the Muhls with 24 runs scored, 19 walks and 13 stolen bases. He has an OPS over 1.000.

“My job is ‘anyway on,’ ” he said. “(Hitting leadoff) you’ve got to be the tone-setter. I feel I’ve got enough speed that I can steal second, and my guys are there to hit me in.”

Burr is the second Muhlenberg player named Player of the Week this season; shortstop Kenay Rodriguez was selected last week.
