Brady Mider, Jaydon Witman, Kyle Archie top list of PIAA Championship qualifiers
Defending Class AAA shot put champ Brady Mider of Berks Catholic is among three Berks athletes seeded No. 1 heading into the PIAA Track and Field Championships Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg.
Hamburg’s Jaydon Witman is No. 1 in the Class 2A 110 hurdles; Muhlenberg’s Kyle Archie is No. 1 in the Class 3A high jump. Kutztown’s Lauren Akers is the highest-seeded Berks girl; she’s No. 5 in the 2A javelin.
Mider is one of Berks’ four returning medalists, joining Exeter’s Logan Wegman, who finished fifth in the Class 3A shot put last year; Wyomissing’s Max Tipton, who was seventh in the 2A shot put; and Wyomissing’s Addie Cohen, who finished second in the 2A 1600 and third in the 3200.
Mider will also be competing for a medal in the discus after winning the District 3 championship Friday; he is seeded third.
Cohen is the lone Berks athlete to qualify in three individual events: The 800, 1600 and 3200. She won District 3 gold in each event this weekend.
Thirty-five Berks boys, or relays, qualified for the return trip to Seth Grove Stadium; 18 Berks girls, or relays, qualified.
Wyomissing is sending the largest contingent of athletes, with seven girls qualifiers and seven boys qualifiers. Schuylkill Valley has seven boys qualifiers and Oley Valley has five boys qualifiers; Wilson has four girls qualifiers.
