Boone girls again look like team to beat in Berks II soccer

Daniel Boone doesn’t plan on surrendering its Berks II girls soccer crown. The Blazers delivered an emphatic win Monday night.

Maggie Holloway and Anna Buckwalter each scored three goals and Boone stopped Fleetwood 7-1 at Birdsboro. A showdown for first place turned into a rout.

Buckwalter is tied for the league lead with six goals. The forward is a new addition to the high school scene. She didn’t play last season, choosing to focus on her club team with FC Revolution.

“I didn’t even know how good she was until she came out for the fall,” coach Mark Reightneour said. “It took about five minutes to figure out she was a stud.”

Boone already had a dynamic attacking group with Lily Ferguson and Holloway returning from double-digit scoring seasons. Those two have combined for six goals in the first four games.

This is mostly a senior dominated roster with Erin Griffin and Gabby Fontana patrolling the midfield and Emma Kay and Liz Trani anchoring the back. Buckwalter, Holloway and Allie Woodcock are sophomore standouts.

Boone (2-0, 3-1) looks like the favorite in the division after this result and will try to challenge the heavyweights in Berks I in crossover play. The Blazers host Wyomissing in a rematch of last year’s county semifinals Thursday.

Reightneour believes the Blazers can play with anyone. They already have 16 goals.

“I think we can score in bunches,” Reightneour said. “If everything is clicking and it’s clicking right now.”

Elsewhere around the league:

Bulldogs rally: Wilson recovered from an early second-half deficit to defeat Exeter 3-1 Monday at Mack Stadium. Keira Levengood scored twice and Lily McCausland had a goal for the Bulldogs (2-0, 3-1), who have won 17 consecutive league games heading into a date at Gov. Mifflin Wednesday.

Marina Messner scored her sixth goal in the opening minute of the second half for Exeter. Levengood answered about two minutes later.

Tulpy takes charge: The Berks IV clash between Tulpehocken and Kutztown went to the Trojans in overtime. Alyssa Boyer scored off Sydney Zellers’ free kick in the third minute of the first OT. Faith Forry had the other goal for Tulpehocken (2-0, 3-1-1).

Kutztown (1-1, 3-2) is the defending division champion. Sydney Ott scored her fourth goal for the Cougars, who will get another shot at Tulpehocken at home on Oct. 6.

Wyomissing still perfect: It looks like Wyomissing’s most interesting matchups will be outside of Berks III. That includes league games against Tulpehocken and Kutztown, both at Flannery Field, and Thursday’s showdown with Boone.

The Spartans are 4-0 after defeating Berks Catholic 3-0 Monday. Izzy Marshall and Hannah Hurleman are the one-two punch everyone expected. They’ve already combined for 10 goals and five assists.
