Berks/LL squad eliminated in Carpenter Cup opener

Four Delaware South pitchers combined on a three-hitter, with 18 strikeouts, in defeating Berks/Lancaster-Lebanon 5-1 Tuesday in the 36th annual Phillies Carpenter Cup Classic at Urban Youth Field in Philadelphia.

The Berks/Lancaster club was held scoreless until the ninth inning when Isaiah Parido of Lampeter-Strasburg hit an RBI double, scoring Dawson Shelley of Ephrata.

Aidan Deakins, of Middletown, De., started and went the first three innings for Delaware South, striking out eight and allowing one hit.

Delaware South advances to play in the second round Friday; the Berks/LL team is eliminated.

Jaydon Goebel of Twin Valley and Jacob Rodriguez of Muhlenberg had the other hits for Berks/Lancaster-Lebanon.

Muhlenberg’s Brad Coley started for Berks/Lancaster-Lebanon and pitched two innings, striking out three and allowing an unearned run.

Nate Fronheiser of Brandywine Heighyts, Owen Rhoads and Kannon Zdimal of Twin Valley and Deven Sheerin of Exeter each pitched an inning for Berks/LL. They were among six pitchers who combined for 12 strikeouts.

Delaware South had just five hits but took advantage of eight walks and four errors, leading to two unearned runs.

Timothy Hitchcock’s RBI single gave Delaware South a 1-0 led in the second. It extended the lead to 3-0 in the fifth on Josh Reinhold’s RBI double and a sacrifice fly by Evan Bouldin.

Delaware South added single runs in the sixth and eighth to extend its lead to 5-0.

The 25-player Berks/Lancaster-Lebanon League roster included 18 players from the Berks League:

Joe Crist, Grant Parks, Aidan Hall and Fronheiser of Brandywine Heights; Mason Walter of Daniel Boone; Sheerin and Alex Kelsey of Exeter; Aiden Soumas of Fleetwood; Coley, Rodriguez, Gio Cavanna and Kenay Rodriguez of Muhlenberg; Zdimal, Goebel, Rhoads and Paul Colombo of Twin Valley; and Ryker Jones and Matt Kramer of Wyomissing.
