Berks/LL eliminated in Carpenter Cup play, 9-0

Olympic-Colonial collected 15 hits off three pitchers in overpowering Berks/LL 9-0 in a Carpenter Cup Classic baseball quarterfinal Saturday at FDR Park in Philadelphia.

The game, which began Friday, was suspended due to rain heading into the fourth inning with Olympic-Colonial leading 3-0.

Wilson’s Tommy Hunsicker and Daniel Boone’s Nick Gualtieri had the only hits for the Berks/Lancaster-Lebanon League squad, which opened with an 8-4 extra-innings win over Delaware North on Tuesday.

Olympic-Colonial advances to face Jersey Shore in a semifinal Monday at 9 a.m. at Citizens Banks Park. Tri-Cape plays Delaware South in the other semifinal at 12:30 p.m.

The Berks/LL squad committed five errors, leading to four unearned runs.

Wilson’s Matt VanOstenbridge started and went three innings for Berks/LL, allowing four hits and three runs, two earned. He struck out six. Exeter’s Gavin Miller pitched three innings, allowing four hits and three runs, one earned; he struck out four.

Starter Jack Kirchner and three Olympic-Colonial relievers combined to strike out 12. Three Berks/LL pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts.

The championship game  is Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at Citizens Bank Park.

The single-elimination tournament includes teams from Delaware, New Jersey, and Eastern Pennsylvania.

Berks/LL lost its opener last year 5-1 to Delaware South after winning its 2021 opener over Philadelphia Public, 8-7.
