Berks Catholic and Gov. Mifflin, the only Berks Girls League champions of the past eight seasons, met for the first time Thursday night.
The young Saints took Round One as sophomores Molly McFadden and Madison Langdon each scored 17 points in 48-38 Division I win at Shillington.
Langdon, Sydney Corado, and Caraline Herb each hit a 3-pointer in the first quarter as the Saints (4-0, 6-4) built a 17-5 lead.
Gov. Mifflin (2-2, 3-7), which trailed 24-13 at halftime, made a run in the third, outscoring Berks Catholic 13-6 behind Jayla Richardson’s eight points and contributions from Shakyla Mayo and Anyah Ortiz.
The Saints, leading by four entering the final quarter, pulled away. McFadden hit 5-of-6 free throws and scored eight of her 17 points in the final quarter; Langdon made all four of her foul shots and also had eight of her 17 points.

Ortiz led the Mustangs with 12 points; Richardson and Mayo each had eight.
Round Two takes places at Wolf Gymnasium Feb. 3; the Mustangs hope to have sharpshooter Taylor Koenig back by then. Koenig, who hit 48 3’s last season, second-most in the league, has yet to play this season due to injury.
The Saints beat the Mustangs twice in the regular season last year before losing 41-40 on Mayo’s buzzer-beater in the Berks semifinals. Gov. Mifflin went on to win the county championship, beating Wilson 47-34.
Since 2011 the Mustangs have won county championships in 2022, 2020, 2019, 2016, and 2015.
The Saints have won the county crown in 2021, 2018, and 2017.
