Alexis Hardy of Wyomissing is UECU Player of the Week

Utilities Employees Credit Union Player of the Week

Alexis Hardy’s friends call her Lexi; her basketball coach at Wyomissing calls her “Lightning.”

The latter gives you a little indication of the physical attributes she brings to the table. She’s a flash of lightning on the court, as she is on the track — she finished second in the state in the 100 as a freshman — and on the soccer pitch.

“Her ability to get through holes in a defense is pretty remarkable,” said Spartans coach Aaron Anders after seeing the sophomore drop a career-high 22 points in the season-opener and follow with 22 points over the next two games, each of them wins.

Hardy averaged a team-high 14.7 points last week to earn Utilities Employees Credit Union Player of the Week for the first full week of the season.

She was a starting guard for the Spartans from the first game of her freshman season, when she finished second on the team in scoring at 7.4 points per game. Her entire game has blossomed since then.

“Her shot has become better, her handle — all around her skills have improved,” Anders said. “She has great court vision, is able to see open people and get through holes.”

Hardy topped 14 points just once last season in 23 games but Anders wasn’t surprised to see her open the season with a breakout game.

“She’s a coachable kid,” Anders said. “She takes on what’s asked of her and she gives it her all. She’s a winner.”

Hardy helped the Spartans go 13-10 last season and finish second in Berks III behind Schuylkill Valley. They qualified for the Berks and District 3 Class 4A playoffs.

Hardy followed that with a breathtaking track debut as she won the Firing Meet 100 in 12.58. At the District 3 Championships she earned a gold, silver and bronze, finishing first in the 400 relay (along with Camille Berger, Jabrea Flowers and Emily Cassler), second in the 100 and third in the 200. She earned a pair medals at the PIAA Championships, finishing second in the 100 and fifth in the 400 relay.

In the fall she had three goals and 17 assists to help Wyomissing’s soccer team go 24-2 with Berks League and District 3 Class 2A championships.

“She’s going to have a lot of medals (and) trophies on her shelf,” Anders said. “I hope she gets a few that have a big basketball on them.”
