As soon as Muhlenberg won its District 3 opener over West York, Muhls coach Matt Flowers was looking forward to a potential rematch against Exeter.
Flowers and his Exeter counterpart Jeff VanGorder are getting that rematch but not on the stage they were hoping for.
The 11th-seeded Muhls (15-10) and 10th-seeded Eagles (16-9), of course, wanted to meet in a District 3 Class 5A boys basketball semifinal Monday. They’ll meet, but it’ll be in a state seeding game at Reiffton after each lost its quarterfinal game.
There’s more at stake for the Berks Catholic girls, who are playing to keep their season alive Monday when they meet Eastern York (13-11) at Wolf Gymnasium in Class 4A state qualifier.
A win will clinch a state berth for the fifth-seeded Saints (13-12). A loss means their season is over and No. 8 Eastern plays on.
The winner is assured at least two more games: Thursday against either Trinity or Middletown in the district fifth-place game, then in the PIAA Tournament. The top six teams from District 3 advance to states.
The Saints lost 66-43 to No. 4 Bishop McDevitt in the quarterfinals Thursday.
All-Berks selection Madison Langdon (16.2) leads the Saints; York-Adams League top scorer and Clarion commit Arianna Seitz (19.7) leads the Golden Knights.
Muhlenberg and Exeter met in a Berks Conference I-II crossover Jan. 15 at Laureldale, with All-Berks forward Shermar Killen scoring 20 points to lead the Muhls to a 59-54 victory. Jayden Kantner also had 20 points and Alex Collado 15 in that game for the Muhls.
All-Berks guard Kevin Saenz and all-division guard Alex Kelsey each scored 15 for the Eagles.
Muhlenberg earned its second straight state playoff berth by winning 42-37 at West York in the opening round of the tournament. Exeter qualified for one of District 3’s eight berths with a 73-49 opening-round win at Lampeter-Strasburg.
The Eagles won the District 3 title last year and went all the way to the PIAA championship game.
