Wilson, Wyomissing to open District 3 girls tournament with home games

Wilson and Wyomissing will have opening-round byes and quarterfinal home games when they open play next week in the District 3 girls basketball tournament.

The Bulldogs and Spartans are among seven Berks teams to qualify for the tournament, along with Gov. Mifflin, Exeter, Berks Catholic, Schuylkill Valley, and Oley Valley.

The tournament tips Monday and concludes with championships Feb. 28-March 1. All championship games will be played at Giant Center. All other games will be played on the home court of the higher-seeded team. All seeds are based on power ratings.

Berks I champ Wilson (23-1) is the No. 2 seed in Class 6A and will meet either No. 7 Central York (16-5) or No. 10 York High (14-8) Thursday at West Lawn at 7. The Bulldogs did not qualify for the tournament last season.

Wilson is the only one-loss team in the bracket. Its only loss came to Dallastown (20-2), the No. 4 seed. Lebanon (22-2) is No. 1.

Berks III champ Wyomissing (24-0) is the No. 2 seed in Class 4A will meet either No. 7 Middletown (14-8) or No. 10 Schuylkill Valley (15-8). The Panthers open at Middletown Monday at 7. The Spartans will host a quarterfinal Thursday at 7.

Wyomissing won its first district championship last season, beating Middletown, Berks Catholic and Delone Catholic.

The Spartans are the only unbeaten team in the district. Delone Catholic (19-2) is the No. 1 seed. Its only losses are to Westtown, a non-PIAA member, and to Northeastern in the league playoffs. Neither game counts toward the District 3 power ratings.

In Class 6A, Gov. Mifflin (15-9) is the No. 11 seed and opens at No. 6 Manheim Township (18-5) Monday at 7.

In Class 5A, Berks II champ Exeter (14-9) is the No. 9 seed and opens at No. 8 Manheim Central (15-8) Tuesday at 7.

In Class 4A, Berks Catholic (12-11) is the No. 5 seed and opens at No. 4 Bishop McDevitt (16-6) Thursday at 7.

In Class 3A, Berks IV champ Oley Valley (17-6) is the No. 5 seed and opens at No. 4 York Catholic (16-6) Monday at 7.

Brandywine Heights finished 14-8 but narrowly missed cracking the six-team Class 3A field. The Bullets (.586) finished seventh, just behind Upper Dauphin (.592).
