Jack McCloskey heads eight-member Berks Basketball Hall of Fame class

Former Alvernia men’s basketball Jack McCloskey heads the eight-member Class of 2024 for the Berks County Basketball Hall of Fame.

The 16th class of the Hall of Fame will be inducted Friday at halftime of the Berks Girls League championship game at Santander Arena. The game tips at 6.

The new members are broken down into three categories:

Old-timers: Carl Bruhn and John Stott.

Modern-day players: Tres Wolf and Bobby Wolff.

Women’s basketball: Meredith Morse, Kristen Venne Marcinko and Cindy Wyrick Koehler.

Coach/official/contributor: Jack McCloskey.

The men’s basketball and coach/official/contributors were selected by the Reading Berks Basketball Association. The women’s category was selected by the 3 Point Goal organization.

Here is a breakdown of the inductees:

Carl Bruhn

The 6-7 Bruhn was an outstanding player at Wernersville High School where he was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder.  He attended the Lowell Tech Institute (which later became University of Massachusetts-Lowell).  He was a four-year starter in college and he scored 1,513 points; he twice scored 44 points in a game.  He holds school scoring records for single-season (29.0 per game) and career (23.6) averages. Bruhn played on the outstanding Robesonia and Lutz & Bitterman rec teams, which won multiple championships; he won multiple scoring titles.  He is member of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell Sports Hall of Fame and the Conrad Weiser Sports Hall of Fame.

Cindy Wyrick Koehler

Wyrick was a three-year starter at Gov. Mifflin who scored 1,199 points and played on the Mustangs’ 1984 league championship team. She was an All-Berks pick and All-State honorable mention selection as a senior in 1986.  She earned a scholarship to Division I Siena College where she was a three-year starter and she scored 911 points.  She coached at Schuylkill Valley from 1991-1998 and was named division Coach of the Year when her team won the Berks III title in 1997.

Kristen Venne Marcinko

Venne was a two-time All-Berks pick at Gov. Mifflin where she scored 1,270 points. She was a four-time all-conference and a three-time All-American at Susquehanna University, where she scored 1,929 points and grabbed 894 rebounds.  She was the recipient of the Joston’s Trophy as the Outstanding Division III Player of the Year as a senior.  She was an assistant coach at Gov. Mifflin and head basketball coach at Daniel Boone for three years.  She is a member of the Susquehanna Sports Hall of Fame and the Middle Atlantic Conference Sports Hall of Fame.

Jack McCloskey

McCloskey played at Central Catholic and Kutztown University and had a storied 33-year coaching career that included stops at North Schuylkill, Boyertown and Alvernia University. His teams won two North Schuylkill League titles and one Ches-Mont League title. He coached the men’s team at Alvernia for 12 years, won three league titles, qualified for the NCAA Tournament four times, reached the Division III Final Four in 1997 and won 227 games. He is a member of the of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame (Berks County Chapter), the Alvernia Sports Hall of Fame, and the Berks Catholic Sports Hall of Fame. The court at Alvernia is named in his honor.

Meredith Morse

Morse was a two–time All-Berks pick at Kutztown where she scored 1,323 points, led the county in scoring as a senior in 1996 and was named Berks’ Most Outstanding Player. She earned a scholarship to Manhattan College where she was four-year starter, scored 1,125 points and was named an Academic All-American.  She played professionally in Europe for three years and played semi-pro for two years with the New Philadelphia Syrens. Morse coached at Kutztown, Gov. Mifflin and Conrad Weiser.  She is a member of the Kutztown High School Sports Hall of Fame.

John Stott

Stott was a starting forward at Reading High for the legendary Pete Carril and averaged 10 points as a senior. He was three-year starting guard at Gettysburg College where he averaged 12.1 points and 4.3 rebounds. He had a long and successful career with G&G and Monarch AC basketball teams, which dominated the city and summer leagues for many years.  He is a member of the Monarch’s team that was inducted in Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame (Berks County Chapter).

Tres Wolf

Wolf was an outstanding point guard at Holy Name, where he played for his father, long-time coach Lloyd Wolf.  He was a two-year starter and an All-Berks pick as a senior with the Blue Jays.  He was a three-year starting point guard at Susquehanna University where as a senior he led the team in scoring (17.5) and assists (7.3).  He was named a third-team All-American and an Academic All-American.  He scored 1,192 career points and graduated as Susquehanna’s career leader in assists (543) and steals (229).  He is a member of Susquehanna’s Sports Hall of Fame and a member of the Berks Catholic Sports Hall of Fame.

Bobby Wolff

Wolff was a two-year starter at Kutztown, finishing with 1,194 points. He set program records as a senior with 718 points and a 25.6 scoring average, still the record. He led Kutztown to the Berks championship game and was an All-Berks pick.  Wolff played 67 games over three seasons at Lafayette. He is a member of the Kutztown Sports Hall of Fame.
