Player of the Year Tyler Minick highlights 2023 All-Berks baseball team (updated with all-division teams)

After earning Berks Player of the Year as a junior Tyler Minick spent the offseason getting stronger and faster.

The results were evident as he batted .431 and led Gov. Mifflin to the Berks baseball championship this season.

He has earned a third straight All-Berks selection and a second straight Player of the Year award.

Gov. Mifflin’s Chris Hole is Coach of the Year. The Mustangs won the Berks I title and finished 18-5.

Minick, a senior committed to play at the University of Connecticut, is one of two repeat picks, along with Muhlenberg junior Cam Burr.

The 11-player team, Coach of the Year and all-division teams were selected in a vote of the league’s coaches. Players are not selected at specific positions.

Mifflin, Exeter and Muhlenberg each have two selections on the team.

Joining Minick and Burr on the team are Deven Sheerin and Alex Kelsey of Exeter, Bryce Detwiler of Gov. Mifflin, Matt VanOstenbridge of Wilson, Dalton Follweiler of Muhlenberg, Joe Crist of Brandywine Heights, Conner Licklider of Hamburg, Dalton Furst of Kutztown and Paul Petersen of Oley Valley.

Minick scored 31 runs in 23 games to lead the Mustangs to their second straight Berks I title and their second county title in three seasons. The shortstop and Mustangs’ leadoff hitter shares the league lead in runs scored and leads the league with 22 stolen bases in 22 attempts.

He homered three times in the BCIAA Tournament and shares the league lead with seven homers.

Burr, who plays second and third base, has batted .348 with 22 runs scored. He has a .483 on-base percentage and a 1.005 OPS.

Sheerin improved to 5-2 and lowered his ERA to 2.27 in pitching six innings in a 4-1 win over Gov. Mifflin last week in the District 3 Tournament. He leads the league with 88 strikeouts over 40 innings and has allowed only 14 hits.

Sheerin, one of the league’s top pitchers as a junior, also emerged as one of its top hitters this year. He’s batting .500 with a team-leading 19 RBIs and a .604 on-base percentage. He has slugged five home runs and has a 1.055 slugging percentage.

Kelsey has been superb as the Eagles’ leadoff batter, with a .562 on-base percentage, 21 runs scored and 19 stolen bases. He’s batting .418 and showed considerable pop, with a pair of home runs  10 extra-base hits and a .709 slugging average.

Kelsey, an all-division pick as a sophomore, is arguably the best defensive center fielder in the league, as well.

Detwiler, an all-division pick last season as a freshman, batted .402, shares the league lead with 31 runs scored and had nine extra-base hits. He drove in 18 runs and was 12-for-12 on stolen base attempts. He is the lone sophomore on the team.

Detwiler played second base and shortstop and was Mifflin’s top pitcher, going 7-1 with 30 strikeouts over 35 2/3 innings. He had a 2.55 ERA.

VanOstenbridge, an all-division pick last year as a sophomore, has emerged as the league’s top left-hander. He’s gone 4-3 with a 1.95 ERA and was a key reason the Bulldogs reached the Berks championship game.

He has struck out 74 batters over 50 ½ innings, allowing just 29 hits. Opposing hitters are batting just .162 against him.

Follweiler, a senior, is the ace of the Muhlenberg staff. He improved to 6-1 with six shutout innings against Manheim Central in a District 3 Class 5A opener Thursday. He has a 1.17 ERA over 48 innings, with 31 strikeouts.

Crist, a senior, has batted .426 for the Bullets with seven home runs, 18 RBIs and 26 runs scored.

Licklider, a senior, was the Hawks’ top hitter, batting .541 with 20 runs scored over 20 games. He had 11 doubles, 15 extra-base hits, an .810 slugging percentage and a 1.354 OPS, all while striking out just twice.

He played second base and pitched for the Hawks, going 2-0 with 25 strikeouts and a 1.31 ERA over 16 innings.

Furst, a senior, was an all-division pick last season. He plays outfield and third base for the Berks IV champion Cougars.

Petersen, one of four juniors on the team, has batted .403 with 20 RBIs and 14 runs scored for the Berks III champion Lynx. He’s gone 5-0 on the mound with a 3.05 ERA and 37 strikeouts over 36 2/3 innings.
