Wyomissing (28-2) vs. North Catholic (24-3)

Where: Bald Eagle High School, Bellefonte

Wyomissing takes aim at District 7 champion North Catholic in a PIAA Class 4A girls basketball quarterfinal game at Bald Eagle High School in Bellefonte at 2. The winner will face either (7-2) Blackhawk or (10-1) Fairview.

The Spartans are fresh off knocking out the defending PIAA Class 3A champion Neumann-Goretti 40-33 while the Trojanettes beat Harbor Creek 51-34 in the second round.

Wyomissing defeated (12-5) Parkway Center City 69-24 in the first round; North Catholic defeated (10-4) Conneaut 70-44 in the first round.

North Catholic, like Neumann-Goretti, usually starts a group of players listed as guards, but the Trojanettes have more size and experience.

Senior 5-11 guard Dacia Lewandowski is committed to Akron and junior 5-11 guard Alayna Rocco is committed to Harvard. Senior 5-7 guard Anna Waskiewicz, junior 5-10 guard Ava Walker, and senior 5-7 guard Tori Drevna typically round out the starting five.

Rocco led the way with 15 points, including four 3’s, in North Catholic’s second-round win over Harbor Creek. Lewandowski had 14 as the Trojanettes jumped out to a nine-point lead after the first quarter.

The Trojanettes went to the Class 3A semifinals last season before losing to Freedom, which ended up losing to Neumann-Goretti in the championship game. North Catholic moved up to 4A this season.

North Catholic has won eight state titles in program history; the Trojanettes won the 1A title in 2016 and 3A titles in 1995, 1994, 1993, 1988, 1984, 1983, and 1980. They lost 60-49 to Bethlehem Catholic in the 4A championship in 2019.

The Trojanettes won their second consecutive WPIAL championship and 22nd overall in program history this season after defeating top-seeded Blackhawk 51-35. They didn’t win in 2021, but won four straight district titles before that.

Head coach Molly Rottmann has won 11 WPIAL championships.
