Wyomissing’s Amaya Stewart named Berks Girls League Player of the Year

Wyomissing basketball coach Aaron Anders says Amaya Stewart, a rapidly developing sophomore, has a high ceiling.

She’s reaching the top pretty quickly.

Two days after leading the Spartans to their first Berks Girls League championship Stewart was named Berks Player of the Year by the league’s coaches.

She is joined on the All-Berks team by Fleetwood’s Alexis Hess, a four-time pick, Berks Catholic’s Caraline Herb, Exeter’s Grace Reedy, Oley Valley’s Morgan Snyder, Reading High’s Ashanti Chapman and Wilson’s Laila Jones.

Jones is a rare freshman pick. Hess was the last freshman selected.

Anders, who led Wyomissing to its first county championship, is Coach of the Year for the first time.

The Player of the Year and Coach of the Year were selected by the league’s coaches.

Stewart averages a team-leading 15.3 points and 11 rebounds per game. She’s averaging two blocked shots and two assists. She scored 20 or more points five times, including a season-high 26 against Fleetwood. She averaged 18 points and nearly 13 rebounds over the three-game Berks League playoffs.

Hess averaged 17.6 points, second-best in the league, and led the team in rebounds (9.2 per game) and 3-pointers (43). She shot 83.5 percent from the foul line, second-best in the league, and averaged 2.9 assists. She finished with 1,403 points, No. 4 in program history. She scored a season-high 31 points against Middletown.

Herb, a senior, led the Saints to a second straight Berks League Division 1 title and to the league semifinals. She averages a team-leading 147 points and leads the league with 57 3-pointers.

Reedy, a junior, is the league’s leading scorer at 22.3 per game and may be Exeter’s first Berks scoring champ. She led the Eagles to a bounce-back season that saw them win the Berks II title after going 2-19 last year. She has 43 3-pointers and shooting 70.5 percent from the foul line.

Snyder, a junior, averages a team-high 13.2 points and helped the Lynx challenge for the Berks IV title. She’s shooting 74.7 percent from the foul line.

Chapman, a senior, was the driving force behind the Red Knights’ drive to the league championship game. She’s a key on-ball defender and a valuable point guard, and averages 7.6 points per game.

Jones averages a team-leading 13 points, averages five rebounds, four assists and three steals. She has a team-high 22 3-pointers and is shooting 71.6 percent from the foul line. She scored 18 points in the season-opener, against Emmaus, and had 20 or more three times, including a season-high 23 against Berks II champ Exeter.
