Gov. Mifflin and Muhlenberg are in line to earn No. 1 seeds and are among at least nine Berks League baseball teams headed to the District 3 Tournament, according to unofficial power ratings posted on the district website today.
There could be a couple more. With just a handful of games to play today on the final day of the regular season, Wilson and Wyomissing still have a chance to qualify for the tournament.
The Bulldogs can do it outright, by beating Boyertown; that should push them past Central York and into the 12th and final spot in the Class 6A field.
The Spartans, currently 11th in the 10-team Class 4A field, would likely need a loss by Big Spring (7-12) to York High (0-18) in order to move up.
Official power ratings are expected to be posted on Thursday. The tournament begins Friday, with games in Class 2A, and continues in full on Monday, with games in all six classifications.
Here are the expected Berks League qualifiers:
- Class 6A: Gov. Mifflin.
- Class 5A: Muhlenberg, Exeter, Twin Valley.
- Class 4A: Hamburg, Fleetwood.
- Class 3A: Oley Valley, Berks Catholic.
- Class 2A: Kutztown.
All but Fleetwood are in line to open at home.
Gov. Mifflin, in Class 6A, will receive a first-round bye and played the winner of the 8-9 game May 26 at home. The Mustangs reached the championship game last year, falling to Wilson.
Muhlenberg, in Class 5A, will open at home May 23 against the No. 16 seed. The Muhls are seeking their first championship since 2008, and fourth overall. They also won in 1980 and 1982.
Exeter is currently at No. 5 in Class 5A but still could move up or down by one spot. It will open at home May 23. The Eagles will be looking for their first district win since 2016.
Twin Valley, in 5A, is currently at No. 8 but locked in a tight battle with No. 7 New Oxford and No. 9 Red Land, each of which play today. If the Raiders finish seventh or eighth, they’ll open at home; if they’re No. 9 they’re on the road.
Hamburg, if it maintains the No. 4 seed, will receive a first-round bye in Class 4A and open at home May 26 against the No. 5 seed.
Fleetwood is currently No. 9 in 4A and will open on the road against No. 8.
Oley Valley, the defending champ in Class 3A, is currently No. 2 in the power ratings and will earn a first-round bye. The Lynx will open May 26 at home against the winner of the 3-6 game.
Berks Catholic is currently No. 4 in 3A and in line for a home opener.
Kutztown, at No. 4 in Class 2A, will open at home Friday, likely against Newport.
All games will be played on the home field of the higher-seeded team, through the semifinals; the championship games will be played at neutral sites.
If Wilson qualifies, the only defending champ which won’t return to the tournament is Elco, which beat Wyomissing to win the Class 4A title last year.
