Berks Track and Field: Weekend notables

Track & Field coverage presented by ATT Sports, Inc.

Jven Williams stole the show during an eventful track and field weekend. It’s hard to top two meet records on two of the longest throws in the state this season.

Williams reached 60-10.5 in the shot put and 177-5 in the discus at the Leonard Stephan Meet Saturday. Only Cumberland Valley’s Wade Shomper, at 61-4.5, has a better distance in the shot in the state. Williams’ discus mark is PA-1.

There were other impressive performances as many of the top athletes were on display in Berks. Here are some notable times and distances.

Boys

  • Anthony Engle, Twin Valley: Engle broke the school record in the 1600 at his home invitational Friday. Engle finished in 4:18.98, which is PA-12 in Class 3A and the best time in Berks this season.
  • Alex Holbrook, Exeter: Holbrook had a terrific result that may have slipped under the radar because it was at Shippensburg. The senior finished the 3200 in 9:22.00, which is PA-13 and a personal best.
  • Brady Mider, Berks Catholic: Mider’s showing at Stephan got lost in all the attention that Williams received. Mider’s 54-4 in the shot put is PA-2 in Class 2A. The sophomore’s 150-9 in the discus ranks seventh.
  • Collin Niedrowski, Wyomissing: The defending county javelin champ reached 161-3 and placed second at Stephan. That’s the top mark in District 3 and is PA-6 in Class 2A.
  • David Rosario, Muhlenberg: Rosario broke the school record in the pole vault when he cleared 13-4 and took first at Twin Valley. Rosario has the best mark in Berks and is PA-15.
  • Gabe Sample, Muhlenberg: Sample won the long jump at 21-10.25 at Twin Valley. Sample has two of the top results in the state. His PRs of 22-9 in the long and 45-8 in the triple jump rank him in the top five in Class 3A.
  • Luke Seymour, Schuylkill Valley: Seymour swept the 800 and 1600 at Stephan. His 4:22.02 missed a meet record by less than a second. His 1:55.91 in the 800 is PA-1 in Class 2A.
  • Jonathen Tamayo, Wilson: Tamayo finished the 300 hurdles in 39.35 to take first place at Stephan. It was the seventh-fastest time in Class 3A. Twin Valley’s Matthew Crow reached a PR at 39.67 and joined Tamayo as one of 14 athletes to break 40 seconds. Crow ran the 110 hurdles in 14.71, which is PA-4.

Girls

  • Lauren Akers, Kutztown: Akers won the javelin at Twin Valley by reaching 122-11. Only five Class 2A throwers have gone farther. That’s the No. 1 mark in District 3 by more than 15 feet.
  • Annika Ermold, Gov. Mifflin: Ermold took first in the shot put at Stephan by throwing 40-4. That result places her at PA-4 in Class 3A. The senior is PA-6 in the discus at 115-0.
  • Sarah Miller, Twin Valley: Miller finished the 800 in 2:15.09 and took first at her home invitational. That time is PA-5 in Class 3A. Wilson’s Katie Dallas, the county record holder in the 800 at 2:12.85, won at Stephan in 2:17.29.
  • Caryn Rippey, Wilson: Rippey is in rare territory after she finished the 1600 in 4:58.80. That puts her at PA-3 in Class 3A and only three seconds off Kristie Moser’s county record that was set in 1993. Only four Berks girls have broken 5 minutes in the past 15 years: Alison Willingmyre, Tessa Mundell, Reagan Underwood and Rippey.
  • Madison Ziska, Schuylkill Valley: Ziska won the long jump and took second in the 200 at Stephan. Her 200 time of 25.93 is PA-3 in Class 2A. The senior is pursuing her first state gold after winning four medals last season.
