Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week
The awards season has only just begun and already Ruben Rodriguez has an armful of them.
Friday he wrapped his hands around the Berks Conference championship trophy after scoring a game-high 22 points in Reading High’s 51-35 win over Berks Catholic.
Sunday he was named Berks Player of the Year by the league’s coaches.
Now he’s the Wyomissing Physical Therapy boys basketball Player of the Week after leading the Red Knights to three straight wins and the title.
Rodriguez can expect a few more awards coming his way. He was a first-team All-State pick last season as a junior, when he led the Red Knights to district and state titles. The junior guard is likely to repeat that honor as well.
Rodriguez was at his best in the title game, hitting 8-of-14 shots from the floor and 6-of-8 from the foul line in helping the Red Knights pull away in the fourth quarter. He scored nine points after the Saints had closed within six points early in the fourth-quarter.

He finished with a game-high eight rebounds and three assists and had a couple steals in helping front a defensive effort that held the Saints to their lowest scoring total of the season.
The championship was the 24th for Reading High and the second for seniors Daniel Alcantara, Joey Chapman and Xavier Davis, but the first for Rodriguez, who was an eighth-grader the last time the Red Knights won it in 2019. He coveted the experience.
“This means more to me, because it’s my first one,” said Rodriguez, “and to do it in Santander feels great because last year we were at BC (with limited fans in attendance). It’s better to win it here.”
The Player of the Week award is the second for Rodriguez this season. He first earned it in January when he had a huge week, setting a program record with 50 points in a game, scoring the 1,000th point of his career and excelling in wins over Vertical Academy and Archbishop Wood.
Rodriguez is the 10th Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week for the 2021-22 season and the third from Reading High. Myles Grey was selected in January.
Berks Conference coaches nominate their top player each week. At the end of the season a Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Year will be selected.
