“He takes pride in playing all-around basketball,” said Cougars coach Craig Mogel.

The 6-foot senior scored 52 points and had 24 assists over three games last week as Kutztown played spoiler in knocking off Berks IV rivals Oley Valley and Tulpehocken.

He is Wyomissing Physical Therapy boys basketball Player of the Week.

“He’s our general on the floor,” said Mogel. “He runs the offense, but he’ll also go down there and get a big rebound. He’s become an all-around player now, he’s not just about scoring any more.

“He’s also about playing defense and making the team better. That’s what I really love about his game this year.”

Goodman had 15 points, six assists, five rebounds and two steals in a 56-45 win over Oley Valley; 14 points, nine assists, nine rebounds and five steals in a 71-60 win over Tulpehocken; and 23 points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals in a 54-30 win over Annville-Cleona.

Those wins pushed the Cougars into fourth place in the District 3 Class 3A power rankings; they’re now in line for a home playoff spot. They have won four straight and 7-of-9 heading into Monday’s game against Upper Perkiomen. They’re 10-9 overall after starting 3-7.

They’ve come a long way from a 3-16 finish last season. Mogel points to Goodman as the driving force.

“His heart and his drive has spread to the other players,” he said. “They’re now believing in it, working hard at practice every day and pushing themselves. They’re watching Xavier work hard every day at practice, and they’re trying to work hard, too.”

Goodman is averaging 18.2 points per game, has 22 3-pointers in 19 games and is shooting 78.4 percent from the free throw line.

He was an all-division pick last season when he averaged 15.7 points.

Goodman is the eighth Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week for the 2021-22 season and the first from Kutztown.
