Fleetwood holds off Wyomissing, hangs onto to top spot in Berks III
(This story will be updated later tonight with details and postgame reaction.)
Jake Karnish scored 17 points and knocked down some key free throws in the fourth quarter as Fleetwood held off Wyomissing 53-44 Monday in a battle for first place in Division III of the Berks Conference.
The Tigers (7-2, 13-4) extended their lead over the Spartans (5-3, 8-7) to 1 1/2 games in the division and can win the title by winning out. Wyomissing needs one more league win to clinch a Berks playoff spot.
Karnish scored nine of his game-high points in the final quarter.
Julian O’Brien led the Spartans with 22 points, 11 of them coming in the final quarter.
The Spartans came into Monday needing just one win in their final four league games to secure a Berks Conference playoff spot. They qualify automatically if they win the division and hold the second-place tiebreaker advantage over the top Berks IV contenders by virtue of head-to-head wins over Antietam, Oley Valley and Tulpehocken.
Fleetwood won the first meeting 52-25 nine days ago at Wyomissing. The Spartans played without starting center Nevin Carter.
The Tigers won their first seven games this season and were 3-0 in league play at one point but have run into trouble in crossover games. They lost at Oley Valley 52-48 and Saturday at Tulpehocken 59-51. The Spartans, meanwhile, closed the gap by scoring a crosover win Saturday over Oley Valley, 42-41, on O’Brien’s game-winner with five seconds left.
