Matt Harley of Gov. Mifflin is Wyomissing PT Player of the Week

Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week

Somehow, Matt Harley was able to put the mayhem, and the bigness moment, out of his mind. His team needed a basket to win the game and he was determined to get it.

“I just dialed in,” he said of blocking out the distractions inside Gov. Mifflin’s bubbling cauldron of a gymnasium Friday night. “I told myself: I’ve gotta hit these shots.”

The Mustangs’ senior forward did. He hit a string of clutch shots down the stretch, none bigger than the go-ahead basket with six seconds left that put Mifflin ahead in its 54-52 win over Wilson.

Harley finished with a game-high 22 points, 13 of them in the final five minutes. He has been named the inaugural Wyomissing Physical Therapy boys basketball Player of the Week for the 2021-22 Berks basketball season.

Harley scored 42 points over three games for the Mustangs last week.

There was no doubt he was getting Mifflin’s final shot after a taut four-quarter, back-and-forth Berks I battle against the Bulldogs.

“He’s a scorer; he was on a roll,” said Mifflin coach Kyle Conrad explained. “He’s a senior, he’s a leader. That’s the guy (we want with the ball).

“He was playing well. You’ve got one possession to win it, you want to put the ball in the best shooter’s hands and let him make a play, and he did. He made some huge shots; he kind of put us on his back down the stretch.”

Harley shares the team lead in scoring with Gerrell McNeil, at 13.3 per game. He as a team-best 11 3-pointers through four games.

The 22 points was one shy of Harley’s career high, set against Wyomissing when he was a sophomore playing for Berks Catholic. The game-winner came on a drive down the left side of the lane; he banked in a shot off the glass with his left hand.

“I was going good, I know I was gonna make the shot,” he said. “So, I just took the ball. It’s not a thing that happens every game. . . it’s just a great feeling.”

Harley is the first Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week for the 2021-22 season.

Berks Conference coaches nominate their top players each week. At the end of the season a Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Year will be selected.
