Multi-sport athletes have been good as gold for Wyomissing Spartans

Wyomissing likely has never had a group of prominent, multi-talented female athletes like this before.

Annie McCaffrey, Audrey Hurleman, Kacey Maggs, Alexis Hardy, Sophia Zeppos, Karly Hyde and others helped the Spartans win five division titles, league championships in basketball and soccer, and district championships in basketball and track and field during the 2023-24 scholastic season.

The Wyomissing girls were so talented, and in so many sports, they nearly eclipsed Wilson as the most successful Berks girls sports program.

In a collegiate Directors’ Cup-style breakdown that ranks the across-the-board success of Berks girls programs, the Spartans totaled 172 points, the most in the Small School division and just behind Wilson, which totaled 174 points and captured the Big School title for the second straight year.

The Bulldogs’ girls teams weren’t quite as dominant as they were a year ago but still brought home six division titles, league championships in lacrosse, swimming and diving, and volleyball, and District 3 gold in swimming and diving.

The Oley Valley field hockey team, which won division, league, district, and PIAA championships, was the highest-scoring single team, with 93 points. Twin Valley lacrosse (66), Wyomissing basketball (57) and Wilson swimming and diving (48) were next in line.

Teams were awarded points for division championships, for qualifying and advancing in the Berks playoffs and for reaching or winning a league championship game (five and 10 points, respectively).

For district competition the points were doubled: 10 for reaching a district final, 20 for winning a championship. Also, two points were awarded for each victory in district competition (but not play-back or consolation rounds).

For the PIAA Tournament the points were increased again: four for qualifying, four for each win. Fifteen points were awarded for reaching a state final, 30 for winning one.

Not every sport fits into a cookie-cutter style playoff system. In swimming, for example, there is no league tournament, just a regular season champ. In bowling there are no district or state team tournaments.

For track and field and cross country points were awarded for a Top 5 or Top 10 finish at the district and state meets.

Water polo was not included because only five Berks schools compete. Individual winners, in sports such as tennis, swimming and diving, wrestling, and track and field, were not factored in; only team events were used.

Finally, the schools were split into size classifications: The 10 largest Berks schools fall into the Big School category, the eight smallest into the Small School.

Wilson scored in nine of the 11 sports, as did Exeter; Gov. Mifflin scored in eight sports. Wilson missed only in bowling and tennis; Exeter missed only in field hockey and lacrosse.

Mifflin was the only other program with three league championships, winning bowling, cross country, and track and field.

Overall there were eight district champs (last year there were six); Wyomissing is the only program with more than one district title.

Oley Valley field hockey was the lone state champ; Wyomissing basketball and Twin Valley lacrosse each reached the state semifinals.

Oley Valley finished second to Wyomissing in the Small School category and third overall. Twin Valley was second in the Big School category and fourth overall. Twin Valley finished first in 2022
