Gov. Mifflin Friday becaome the 10th PIAA champion from Berks County, and the first in eight years, when it edged Hollidaysburg 2-1 in the Class 5A championship game.
Oley Valley and Boyertown each have won three state titles. The Bears were members of the Berks League for the second of those three championships, in 1991.
Brandywine Heights, Conrad Weiser, and Reading High are the only other Berks programs with PIAA baseball banners. The Scouts, in 2010, are the last Berks League team to win a state crown.
Gov. Mifflin had never won a PIAA team championship in any sport.
(Mustangs water polo and bowling teams have won state championships, but those sports are not sanctioned by the PIAA.).
This is the 47th year of PIAA baseball championship, which began in 1977.
