Inter-AC walks all over Berks/Lancaster in Carpenter Cup opener

Ten walks and two hit batters doomed the Berks/Lancaster squad in its 11-4 loss to the Inter-AC Independents Monday in the opening round of the single-elimination Carpenter Cup Classic at FDR Park in Philadelphia.
The Berks/Lancaster club trailed 6-0 after two inning and 10-0 before scoring four runs in the eighth.
Wilson’s Christo Hunsicker delivered a two-out, two-run double to drive in a pair of runs. Muhlenberg’s Kevin Rodriguez followed with an infield chopper which caused an errant throw, leading to two runs.
The Berks/Lancaster club was limited to five hits, including doubles by Hunsicker and Rodriguez.
Matt VanOstenbridge, added to the team after his Wilson club was eliminated in the PIAA Tournament late last week, started and allowed two hits over three innings. He walked four and was charged with six runs, five earned. He struck out five.
Four Berks pitchers, including Anthony Manogue of Daniel Boone, Noah Rauenzahn of Wyomissing and Tim Fries of Oley Valley, combined for 11 strikeouts.
Five Inter-Ac pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts.
Also collecting hits for Berks: Nate Lord of Twin Valley, Jake Hafer of Exeter, and Maddox Roy of Daniel Boone.
Inter-AC advances to play SEPA, a 3-2 win over Olympic-Colonial, in the second round Thursday at 9. The semifinals are June 24 and the championship game June 25, both at Citizens Bank Park.
The Berks/Lancaster squad opened the Carpenter Cup last year with an 8-4, 10-inning win over Delaware North before being eliminated 9-0 in the following round by Olympic Colonial.
The tournament, which began in 1986, has included future major leaguers such as Mike Trout, Mike Piazza, and Bobby Higginson.
The tournament includes teams from Delaware, New Jersey, and Eastern Pennsylvania.
