Two-time Berks Player of the Year Tyler Minick is headed to the NCAA Tournament with the University of Connecticut after a big performance in the Big East Tournament.
Minick, a freshman from Gov. Mifflin, was named to the all-tournament team after homering and driving in six runs in the Huskies’ two games. He was Connecticut’s only selection.
The Huskies (32-23) earned an at-large bid and the No. 3 seed in the Norman Regional. They will face No. 2 Duke on Friday at 7 on ESPN+.
Connecticut won its fourth straight Big East regular season title, going 17-4, but was swept in the tournament, losing a pair of extra-inning games.
Minick hit a two-run homer in a 3-2, 11-inning loss to Xavier. He had two hits and drove in four runs in a 10-9, 10-inning loss to Georgetown.
Minick is batting .265 in 36 games, with seven homers, 26 RBIs and a .504 slugging percentage. He has committed just two errors.
He was the only freshman among the 11 players selected for the all-tournament team.
The four-team regional is a double-elimination format with the winner advancing to the Super Regionals.
UConn is going to the tournament for a program record sixth straight season, and for the 10th time since 2010. It will be the 25th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.
Minick batted .431, slugged a league-leading .897, had a Berks League-best 1.450 OPS and led the Mustangs to a county championship for the second time in his three seasons as a senior.
He had a .553 on-base percentage, scored 31 runs scored in 23 games and had 22 stolen bases in 22 attempts in 2023.
Despite missing a chance to play as a ninth-grader due the 2020 season being suspended he finished with 14 career homers, 87 runs scored, and 53 steals, all believed to be program records. The Mustangs won 59 times in his three seasons.
He had a career batting average of .427 over 69 games with a .541 on-base percentage and .799 slugging percentage.
