Wyo’s top-ranked defense again relentless in win over Fleetwood

Wyomissing’s defense was so dominant in a 48-7 Berks Football League 2 win over Fleetwood Friday that it had three players touch the ball on the same play.
Aiden Mack, a Richmond commit, deflected Tanner Maddocks pass, and Matt Kramer and Jack Miller were both there for the interception. Kramer came away with the ball as Wyomissing punctuated the last play of a powerful first quarter.
“I was looking up in the air and we both came down with it and I came out with it,” Kramer said.
The Spartans (2-0, 5-0) jumped the Tigers (0-2, 2-3) early and often. Kramer cashed in the turnover with a 3-yard touchdown run and it was 28-0 only minutes into the second quarter. Amory Thompson opened the scoring earlier on a 56-yard touchdown run on the third play of the game.
“All week we have been preaching about doing our job on offense,” Thompson said. “The first couple plays, the linemen did their job and we did what we came right to do and ran it right up there.”
Thompson’s biggest play may not have been the touchdown run. He recovered an errant pitch, intended for him, on his own 7. The play resulted in an 11-yard loss, but the recovery prevented Fleetwood from gaining life in a game they were trailing 14-0.

“If he doesn’t get the ball back, we are in trouble there,” Spartans coach Bob Wolfrum said. “They would have the ball on the 5-yard line or so; he made a big play to save us.”
There wasn’t much trouble for the top-ranked defense in Berks. It never allowed the dual-threat Maddocks, a Villanova recruit, to get going. He only had 6 yards passing and 14 yards rushing against the first-team defense in the first half.
“We think we have a really good defense,” Wolfrum said. “We especially play the spread teams well with our pressure game. Our kids love to play against offenses like this. They really have to think with the zone blitzes and picking up men. They are proud of how they handle that, and they did a great job tonight.”
The Spartans offense was just as bright. Thompson had a game-high 91 yards on five carries as part of a rushing attack that piled up 361 yards. Drew Eisenhower had 70 yards and a touchdown, and a highlight reel run down the left sideline. Jven Williams pulled on the run and Eisenhower followed his massive tackle while weaving around the carnage that the Division I prospect left in his wake. That run set up the first of two Tommy Grabowski 1-yard touchdown plunges.
“I love pulling, that’s my favorite thing to do,” Williams said.
Wolfrum was very pleased with the performance on both sides of the ball after stating his team was not sharp and lacked enthusiasm in their last two lopsided wins, against Boyertown and Hamburg.
“The last couple weeks we have been playing with a lot less energy than we need,” Kramer said. “This week we knew we needed to come out with energy from the get-go.”
Wyomissing will need to bring the same energy next Friday in non-league showdown with 11-time state champion Southern Columbia, the top-ranked team in the state in Class 2A.
“If we play the same way we played today, it’s going to be a great game,” Thompson said.
