Wyomissing’s win causes big shakeup in state rankings, with two new No. 1’s

Wyomissing’s win over Southern Columbia made waves across the state and caused a big shift in the PennLive.com rankings, leading to a new top-ranked team … in Class 2A.

Southern was bumped out of the top spot in that classification but Wyomissing remains No. 3 in Class 3A, behind North Schuylkill and Central Valley, each of which remains unbeaten.

There’s also a new team at the top of the Class 6A rankings after LaSalle College — last week’s No. 3 — knocked off No. 1 St. Joseph’s Prep 28-21 at Franklin Field. The reigning PIAA champs fell to No. 4, behind Pittsburgh Central Catholic and unbeaten North Penn.

There was some movement in Class 5A, but not for Gov. Mifflin, which remains No. 1; the Mustangs were idle last week. Last week’s No. 3, Cathedral Prep, lost to McDowell, 31-12; last week’s No. 4 Academy Park also fell, to Avon Grove. That allowed unbeaten Moon to move up two spots to No. 3.

Mifflin is joined in the Top 10 by two other District 3 teams: Manheim Central, which slipped to No. 6 after a loss to Warwick, and unbeaten Shippensburg, which debuts at No. 9 after a 27-7 win over Mechanicsburg.

In Class 4A Berks Catholic moved up a spot to No. 9 after its win at Daniel Boone. Bishop McDevitt, the other ranked District 3 team in that class, remains at No. 4.

Pottsville, which has bounced back with four straight wins after a Week 2 loss to Wyomissing, returns to the rankings at No. 10 in 4A.

Wyomissing remains the only ranked District 3 team in 3A; Boiling Springs (5-1) is listed as a Team To Watch.

In Class 2A unbeaten Farrell moves up a spot to No. 1, taking Southern Columbia’s spot. York Catholic is ranked No. 10 in that class.

Steel-High remains No. 1 in 1A.
