Wyomissing’s Nevin Carter picks off Body Zone Physical Therapy Defensive Player of the Week honors

Body Zone Physical Therapy Defensive Player of the Week

Opponents learned a while ago not to throw to Nevin Carter’s side of the field. He’s 6-5, rangy, and a three-year starter at cornerback, with a pair of district championship medals to show for it.

Down a couple of scores Friday, Southern Columbia was forced to put the ball up in the air and Carter made them pay, picking off two passes in the Spartans’ 41-21 victory.

He also helped shut down the run, making seven tackles to earn Body Zone Physical Therapy Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Spartans coach Bob Wolfrum was more impressed with Carter’s run support than the two interceptions.

“He has done a great job with that, of not letting them ever break contain and get all the way to the corner (on sweeps),” he said. “He did another great job with that Friday. We didn’t let ’em get outside and he was a big part of that; he was not allowing them to turn the corner.”

The Spartans came up with five turnovers and a blocked punt in ending the nation’s longest high school winning streak at 65. They limited Southern to 219 total yards.

Carter teams with Amory Thompson, another senior and three-year starter, to give Wyomissing a pair of top-flight cornerbacks.

“Both of our corners, we can leave them alone and they’re going to be fine on coverage, one-on-one,” Wolfrum said. “They stepped in the second game of their sophomore year and they’ve both been starting ever since.

“In pass coverage, Nevin’s just really good. We don’t always get a chance to intercept a lot of balls, because people aren’t throwing that way, but he had two nice plays.”

Carter is the second Wyomissing player to be selected Body Zone Physical Therapy Defensive Player of the Week this season; linebacker Matt Kramer was selected in Week 4.
