Wyomissing’s field-side outside linebacker has a lot of responsibilities. He has to cover receivers in open space, come up to play the run and sometimes blitz the quarterback.
Matt Kramer did all of those things well in a 47-7 victory over Hamburg Saturday when he recorded four tackles, two sacks and a pair of hurries to earn Body Zone Physical Therapy Defensive Player of the Week honors.
“He’s a good combination of being very sharp (mentally) and having the quickness,” said Wyomissing coach Bob Wolfrum. “He’s a good solid kid, (and) he can take people on.
“Our outside ‘backers have to do a lot of different things, and he can do em.”
Kramer, a 6-1, 210-pound junior, saw a lot of playing time at inside linebacker last season as a back-up on Wyomissing’s District 3 Class 3A championship team.
He wasn’t available the first two games of this season but has made a sudden impact since returning.
“Matt had a really nice game (Saturday),” Wolfrum said, “it’s really nice to have him back. He’s a quality player. He’s smart and knows what he’s doing, and he’s got the physical talent to do it.”
The Spartans allowed just six first downs and 84 total yards; Hamburg’s only touchdown came on a kickoff return.
On his second sack, with Hamburg facing a third-and-19 at its own 3, Kramer nearly scored a safety before quarterback Xander Menapace stretched the ball out over the goal line to avoid being ruled down in the end zone.
