BRYN ATHYN — For the Wyomissing Spartans, Friday afternoon was an opportunity to regroup and regain their bearings.

The Spartans scored on two of their first three offensive plays and rolled to a leisurely 46-19 non-league win at The Academy of the New Church.

Coming in the wake of last week’s loss to The Haverford School, the win gave the Spartans (2-1) a jolt of positive energy.

The contest was settled early on as Wyomissing scored on each of its five of its first-half possessions and led 32-7 at intermission.

“I thought in the beginning of the game we played very well,” said Wyomissing coach Bob Wolfrum. “I think their confidence was a little bit better.

“We watched the film from (Haverford School); it wasn’t as bad as we thought. Offensively, we weren’t great last week but defensively, we played very well. I thought we played better offensively today.”

The Spartans did their early damage with big plays. The game’s first punt saw Justice Hardy break a 33-yard return to give his team the ball at the ANC 21-yard line.

On the next snap Chase Eisenhower carried for 20 yards to the 1 before scoring on the next play.

Eisenhower scored again before the first quarter ended on a 47-yard dash. Prior to that, Hardy was at the end of a 45-yard strike from Teddy White which served as a prelude to the Lions hitting on a big play of their own: An 83-yard catch and run that saw quarterback Bruno Moses find Coleman Boyesen behind the Spartan secondary to cut Wyomissing’s lead to 12-7 with 2:23 left in the opening quarter.

Moses finished 18-of-28 through for 199 yards.

From there, the Spartans ran off 27 unanswered points. Hardy, on a 14-yard reception, and Tyler Niedrowski, on a 3-yard run, scored second-quarter touchdowns.

Wolfrum pulled his starters after halftime. Eisenhower finished with 72 rushing yards on just four carries.

“After the loss to Haverford we were a little down,” he said. “We knew we needed to come back and win this game and we won big. So, we’re happy.”

Eisenhower noted the success the Spartans have by spreading the ball around.

“We’ve got a bunch of backs that can touch the ball any time and go the distance, hit the hole hard, or get us a first down whenever we need it,” he said. “I think it’s really great to be able to do that.”

It was all hands on deck for Wyomissing after halftime.

Brady Eisenhower, Wyomissing’s No. 2 quarterback, didn’t dress because of an injury so Austin Lecher and Derek Macrina saw time there.

Marcus Armistead went in from 3 yards out five minutes into the third quarter. Aidan Sierra added a 2-yard touchdown not quite three minutes into the fourth.

“It’s always nice for the kids to get in the game,” Wolfrum said. “We don’t want to run scored up on teams, so we let those guys get some time.

“They’re going to play a JV game tomorrow morning. But it will never hurt them to get more experience.”
