Wyomissing PT Player of the Week Chase Eisenhower knows all about big-game performance

Over four seasons at Wyomissing Chase Eisenhower has played in enough postseason games to know what one feels like. He’s played in district championship games in each of his first three seasons and in state semifinals twice.

Saturday’s early season showdown against The Haverford School didn’t qualify as a playoff game but the intensity surrounding it, and the high level of play during it, made it seem like one.

“This felt like a championship game,” Eisenhower said after the Spartans held on for a 29-26 victory.

Eisenhower’s veteran presence, as well as his play-making ability on both sides of the ball, were keys to pulling out the victory and the reason he has been selected the season’s second Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week.

The 6-foot, 220-pound fullback rushed for a game-high 113 yards on 25 pounding carries, none bigger than his last of the game, an 11-yard run in the final minute that gave the Spartans a first down and allowed them to run out the clock.

He was just as big on defense, especially in the second half when Spartans limited the Fords to 86 total yards and just one score. Wyomissing went into the final quarter trailing 26-21 but stopped the Fords on downs once and forced a punt on their only other possession.

Eisenhower finished with a team-high nine tackles, including two for loss, and a sack. On Haverford School’s final possession of the third quarter he and Zander Westwood teamed up for a tackle on a third-down screen pass that gained zero yards. One play later the Fords turned it over on downs following an incompletion.

“We weren’t real happy with our defense there a couple times (in the first half),” said Wyomissing coach Bob Wolfrum, “but towards the end I thought we played really well. We made a bunch of big plays.”

Eisenhower recorded a sack on a blitz late in the third quarter that put the Fords in a third-and-19 jam.

“We noticed that they were getting a little tired,” Eisenhower said, “so we thought we’d get a little more pressure on them and I think we did a great job.”

Things didn’t go well for Wyomissing at times in the first half, the lowlight being a fumble that was returned 80 yards for a score. The Spartans were in the red zone, about to score to go up 14-0 before that game-changing play dramatically swung momentum toward the Fords. A team without the veteran leadership of players such as Eisenhower and fellow captain Tyler Niedrowski might have wilted but the Spartans went right down the field on their next possession and regained the lead.

“Things fell apart, but that happens in football,” Eisenhower said. “We knew stuff like that was going to happen, so we knew we had to bounce back and we did just that.”

Through two games Eisenhower has rushed for 179 yards. He needs 559 yards to become the third back in program history to rush for 3,000 career yards and 675 yards to pass Gregory Lord’s program record of 3,116 yards, set in 2006.

Eisenhower was an all-league fullback as a junior and led the team with 784 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. He was also an all-league pick at linebacker. He earned the same honors on the Small Team All-Berks squad and was a second-team pick on the Pennsylvania Football News Coaches-Select Class 4A All-State team.

Eisenhower was the only freshman on a 2022 Wyomissing team that included J’ven Williams and Ryker Jones, won its first 13 games, and was ranked No. 1 in the state for most of the season before falling in the PIAA semifinals. He moved into the starting lineup in Week 3 because of an injury and has been there ever since.
