Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week Drew Engle a true triple threat
It didn’t take long for Drew Engle to show West Perry it was in for a long night Friday in its District 3 Class 4A quarterfinal at Twin Valley.
The senior tailback took the Raiders’ first play 80 yards for a touchdown, the opening act of a five-touchdown night that saw him break the program record for career touchdowns and earn his first Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week this season.
“It was just a basic off tackle play, it wasn’t anything special,” Raiders coach Brett Myers said of Engle’s first touch in the 55-15 win. “That set the tone. The other stuff was just him showing how athletic and how good he is. The interception, the kick return . . . that was just him being him.”
Drew Engle being Drew Engle is a pretty good thing. His night included a career-high 212 rushing yards on just 12 carries, scoring runs of 80, 6 and 28 yards, a 75-yard kickoff return, his first career Pick-6 – a program-record 95 yards – and a whopping 388 all-purpose yards.
Nothing Myers doesn’t see from Engle every day at practice.
“(When he was) playing Little League it looked the same way,” Myers said. “From 8 years old until now, the only thing that’s changed is he’s gotten bigger. He’s just different.”
Engle makes headlines because of his offensive ability; earlier this season he set a program record with six TDs in a game.
Engle’s a threat to score on defense, too. Surprisingly he hadn’t had a Pick-6 until Friday. He caught the ball at the 5; within a few strides it was apparent he was taking it to the house.

“You give him the whole field, he’s gonna make a play,” Myers said. “He runs in the 4.4’s (in the 40); the other part of it is his wiggle and his quickness. Rarely does somebody (tackle) him by themselves.”
Engle, as usual, gave credit to others for his big play.
“The coach called a great defense,” he said. “I was in the perfect position to intercept the pass. I saw daylight and went for it.”
Engle usually returns kickoffs from the back line, alongside Ben Grundy. Twin Valley’s coaches noticed West Perry often kicks short, with pooches and squibs, so they moved Engle up to the second line. That set him up for his third kickoff return this season and fifth in his career – probably a program record.
Engle set the program single-season rushing record as a sophomore, with 1,599 yards. He missed most of his junior season with an injury but now finds himself in position to break his record. After rushing for 218 yards Friday he has a team-leading 1,324 for the season. He needs 276 yards to break the single-season mark.
Despite missing nine games last season he’s also in range of the Raiders’ career rushing mark of 3,684, set by Dominic Caruso. Engle needs 244 yards to top that.
Again, he shares the credit for his success.
“My offensive line is fantastic,” Engle said. “I love them and they are some of the hardest working teammates I have. I love running behind them.”
Engle shares the Berks lead with 29 touchdowns. He’s smashed the previous record of 17, set by Johnson in 2022. His five TDs Friday pushed his career total to 53, breaking the record of 49, set last year by Evan Johnson.
His 24 rushing touchdowns this season are also a program record; the previous record was 15.
His 388 all-purpose yards are also probably a Twin Valley record.
Engle is committed to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point and play lacrosse for the Black Knights; if not for that Division I football coaches would be clamoring to sign him.
Engle is the third Twin Valley player to earn the award this season, following Ryan Rementer and Greyson Miller. Engle was selected once last season and twice in 2023.
