Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week: Raiders’ Evan Myers

It was said during his days at North Carolina that the only person who could hold Michael Jordan under 20 points was Dean Smith, his coach.

You can make a parallel with Twin Valley quarterback Evan Myers, whose coach happens to be his father, Brett.

If the elder Myers’ main focus was ego gratification he could have his son throw a lot more passes and call his own number in the run game more often. It’s not, of course; the goal at Twin Valley is to teach and play football the right way, and to do it successfully.

Evan Myers has been more facilitator than lead dog during his four seasons leading the Raiders but he showed in the season opener he can carry the load offensively if needed.

The senior ran for a touchdown and 111 yards and passed for a career-high 238 yards in a 42-16 win at Berks Catholic. In an opening week of some big offensive performances across Berks, Myers’ 349 total yards from scrimmage was enough to earn Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Evan Myers is surrounded by play-makers; he’s got a pair of 1,000-yard backs in his backfield in Drew Engle and Evan Johnson. There’s not a huge need for him to carry the ball but he can, just as well as anyone.

“Probably, the last two years, I’ve held him back a little bit,” Brett Myers said after Friday’s win. “He’s a play-maker. He’s a point guard (in basketball), he plays middie in lacrosse. When he played baseball, he was a middle infielder and pitcher. He’s a competitor, and he competes. Tonight’s kind of what you expect.”

Evan Myers.

Evan Myers opened the scoring Friday with a 45-yard TD run. He threw a 44-yard scoring pass to Matt Knight later in the first quarter and a 47-yard TD to Ben Grundy early in the second half. He ended up completing 12-of-16 passes, with one interception. His rushing total came on just four carries.

“The offensive line gave both the backs and myself time,” Evan said. “The receivers were where they should be, and they made great plays.”

Myers has passed for 4,412 career yards, No. 6 on the all-time Berks list. He passed three guys on that list in one night: Steve Huber of Wilson, Corey Unger of Fleetwood and Wyomissing, and Terrance Derr of Berks Catholic.

He has 303 career completions, six shy of the program record.

He’s well on his way to joining Wilson’s Chad Henne as the only Berks passers to throw for 1,000 yards in four straight seasons.

Myers had passed for 200 yards just once before, last season against Fleetwood.

He was Player of Week once last season following a 48-7 win over Hatboro-Horsham. His 14 completions in that game went to eight different receivers.
