Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week: Cam Jones of Wilson

Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week

No one doubts the Wilson Bulldogs could plug Cam Jones in at tailback and he’d produce a 1,000-yard season and 20 touchdowns.

So far in his three seasons they haven’t needed him there. His brother Jadyn handled that job the past two years and Cleveland Harding stepped up in the offseason to show he could handle it this season.

Plus, Jones is so valuable elsewhere — as an all-league, shutdown cornerback; a premier kick returner; and at wide receiver — they can’t afford for him to be a full-time ballcarrier.

Friday, in their annual battle against Central Dauphin, the Bulldogs needed Jones at tailback and he came through with flying colors, running for 13 times for 122 yards and a touchdown in a 17-10 win at Speed Ebersole Stadium.

The big night earned Jones his third Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week award.

He was named twice last season, mostly because of his kick return acumen. He was also selected once last year as Defensive Player of the Week.

Jones was pinch-hitting at tailback after Harding went out early in the season-opener with an ankle injury.

“Cam could be our (full-time) running back,” Wilson coach Doug Dahms said. “But then he’s out on the field every play, (taking a) pounding. He’ll carry the ball some more, but once Cleveland’s back we can give him a break.”

Jones has played tailback before but realizes that’s not the best full-time role for him at this time.

“It was definitely a big loss with Cleveland (out),” he said. “At practice, the offense knew that I had to get the ball so we kinda just did whatever we could to get me it.”

The Holy Cross recruit made the biggest play of the game when he broke off a 53-yard run to give Wilson a 17-7 lead late in the third quarter.

“I’m just reacting,” Jones said of the long score. “The line did an amazing job tonight. Kudos to them. They bounced back from last week. The d-tackle got in (on that play) so I had to bounce it. It was supposed to go up the middle. I had tons of blockers with me on the outside to help me get space.”

Central Dauphin did its best to keep the ball away from Jones on punts and kickoffs. They saw him return a punt for a TD in the opener against Roman Catholic.

“You saw what he does in the open field,” Dahms said. “He’s a threat to go the distance every time he touches the ball. It’s the beauty of getting the ball in his hands and getting him outside. Look out.”

The win over Central Dauphin was critical for the Bulldogs, who avoided an 0-2 hole. Last season they were fighting an uphill battle most of the way before hitting stride down the stretch.

“We took a tough loss last week, but we played a great team,” Jones said of the 46-15 loss to Roman Catholic. “People kinda wrote us off a bit after losing that big to Roman. We took that momentum and hunger after being written off last week and brought it here.”
