Wyomissing closes out third straight perfect regular season with military-like precison (updated with box score)
Some of the coaches at Wyomissing groan when Spartans head coach Bob Wolfrum returns from one of his fact-finding missions to the U.S. Army Military Academy.
Andy Wolfrum coaches football at West Point and often shares defensive schemes and concepts that might help his dad’s team.
The elder Wolfrum has adopted pressure packages and coverage schemes the Black Knights use against Spread attacks and the Spartans used many of them Saturday to shut down high-powered Conrad Weiser in a 45-7 season-ending victory at the A-Field.
The Scouts entered with the top-ranked offense in the league and one of the greatest pass-catch combos in Berks history in quarterback Logan Klitsch and split end Aanjay Feliciano. They were buried by the relentless Spartans (6-0, 10-0), who wrapped up the Berks Football League Section 2 title and completed their third straight perfect regular season — unprecedented in Berks football history.
Wyomissing’s first-string defense allowed just 41 total yards and three first downs over three quarters before retiring for the afternoon.

“It’s all just preparation, coaches putting us in great positions, us practicing hard,” said inside linebacker and senior captain Jack Miller, who was in on two of Wyo’s three sacks. “We had a lot of checks to certain formations, and we did that well.
“The best thing: We tackled very well. They would dump it off for 3 yards, and he would be tackled. We didn’t allow any big plays.”
Cornerback Nevin Carter, a three-year starter, set the tone on the Scouts’ second possession when he came up fast on fourth-and-3 and stopped tight end Josh Pazdrick short of the sticks after a reception.
“We covered all day,” Wolfrum said proudly. “He would dump it, but we tackled ’em, and they gained 3 yards. That’s what we work on all the time. When we pressure, they can catch it (but) you’ve gotta tackle ’em right away. We did that really well today.”
Wolfrum criticized his team early in the season for some subpar execution against lesser opponents but it’s clear the Spartans know how to rise to the occasion in big games. They showed that with a knockout punch over a good Pottsville team in Week 2, and a historic win over top-ranked Southern Columbia at midseason.
They showed it again Saturday when they crashed the pocket repeatedly and pressured Klitsch — Berks’ top-rated passer — into a 5-of-13 first half that netted just 25 passing yards.
“What you do well,” said Weiser coach Alan Moyer, “they take away. There’s not a lot of weaknesses there. They’ve got kids that run hard, they execute flawlessly, and defensively they just fly to the ball.”
The defensive backs — Carter, Amory Thompson, Charlie McIntyre and Drew Eisenhower — were often left alone in coverage because of all the blitzes but they came up quickly to break up passes or make clean tackles. Eisenhower broke up one pass with a big hit, then intercepted a ball on the next play.
“That team’s averaging, what? Forty points a game?” said senior defensive end Aiden Mack. “We held them to seven. That’s definitely demoralizing.”
The Scouts (4-2, 7-3) were stopped twice in the first half on fourth down, the second time when they tried a fake punt and completed a pass. Andrew Delp came up quickly to stop it short of the sticks.
“At the beginning they were full of energy,” Wolfrum said of Weiser. “The fact that their offense wasn’t going anywhere and we started to impose our will on ’em, then it become apparent they weren’t gonna be able to get it done. It sort of broke them, I think.”
The Spartans were just as dominant on the other end. They scored on each of their five first-half possessions to lead 31-0 at the break — this against one of the top-rated Class 4A teams in the district. Tommy Grabowski ran for 116 yards and three TDs, most of it in the first half. Thompson broke off an 18-yard scoring run. McIntyre turned a short swing pass into a 26-yard TD, shedding off a tackler at the line before turning it up field.
Wyomissing has won 25 straight regular season games, the third-longest streak in Berks history. If not for COVID-19, which forced a truncated schedule in 2020 — the Spartans played just five regular season games — they’d be even higher on the all-time list.
“We’ll look back on the undefeated season and how many championships we have in the offseason,” said Wolfrum. “Right now we’re just worried about getting ready for next week (and the start of the District 3 Class 3A playoffs).”
