Wyomissing has its work cut out in order to get a home game in the upcoming District 3 Tournament.

A loss last week to Twin Valley dropped the Spartans from No. 2 to No. 5 in the Class 4A power rankings. The top five teams in that classification earn a first-round bye; the top four open at home in the quarterfinals.

If the Spartans (7-1) don’t move up at least one spot they’ll be opening the playoffs on the road for the first time since 2013, when they played at Schuylkill Valley.

Wyomissing 16-0 on its home field in the district playoffs, and 19-0 all-time in postseason games there.

Wyomissing is one of seven Berks teams in strong position to make the district tournament, which opens Oct. 31 with games in the five largest classifications.

If the playoffs began today, Wilson, in Class 6A; Exeter and Muhlenberg, in 5A; Twin Valley and Wyomissing, in 4A; and Berks Catholic and Schuylkill Valley, in 3A, would qualify. Governor Mifflin is just outside the bubble in 6A.

The higher-seeded team will host through the semifinals. Championship games will be played at neutral sites, most likely local high schools. Hersheypark Stadium will not be used.

Championship games will be played Nov. 21 in Classes 4A, 5A, and 6A; the 3A championship is Nov. 14; the 2A and 1A championships are Nov. 7. Only district champs advance to the PIAA Tournament.

Wyomissing plays at home this week against Octorara (4-4) and closes the regular season at Lampeter-Strasburg (7-1). If the Spartans win both games they should move into the top four and possibly could move past Lampeter-Strasburg. The Pioneers play at Twin Valley (8-0) this week.

Twin Valley is bidding for the No. 1 seed in 4A. If it wins out, against Lampeter and Daniel Boone (0-8), it will finish no lower than No. 2. If No. 1 Susquehanna Township (8-0) loses to either Trinity (6-2) or Milton Hershey (2-6) that would open the door for the Raiders.

Wilson (7-1) is No. 4 in 6A, where 10 teams qualify and the top six earn first-round byes. The Bulldogs will move up at least one spot if they win out, this week at McCaskey (0-8) and in Week 10 against Manheim Township (7-1) at Gurski Stadium. The Blue Streaks are No. 3.

In 6A, No. 2 Central York has just one game remaining against a PIAA opponent, in Week 10 vs. York High (6-2). No. 1 Harrisburg (8-0) closes against Central Dauphin (3-5) and C.D. East (2-6).

Mifflin (3-5) is at No. 11 and within range of catching either No. 10 Dallastown (4-4) or No. 9 Cedar Crest (4-4). The Mustangs close at Elizabethtown (4-4) and against Ephrata (4-4). The Mustangs will also be in the running for an Eastern Conference berth, should they miss districts.

Exeter  (7-1) likely cost itself a shot at the No. 1 seed in 5A and could miss out on a first-round bye if it falls to Conestoga Valley (8-0) this week. The Eagles are No. 5; should they beat the Buckskins, and then Daniel Boone, they could move up to at least No. 4, securing a first-round bye.

Muhlenberg (7-1) is No. 7 in 5A and in position to earn a first-round home game. If the Muhls win out, against Academy Park (4-4) and Conestoga Valley, they could challenge for a first-round bye.

Twelve teams qualify in 5A; four get first-round byes. Seeds 5-8 open at home.

Berks Catholic (6-2) will secure the No. 1 seed in 3A if it wins out, against Hamburg (2-6) and top-ranked Annville-Cleona (7-1).

Schuylkill Valley (5-3), at No. 5, is in position to grab one of the six available spots in 3A. The Panthers play at Annville-Cleona this week and at Lancaster Catholic (4-4) in Week 10. They figure to need at least one more win to clinch a spot. They could be in jeopardy with a 5-5 record.

The top two seeds in 3A have a quarterfinal-round bye. The No. 3 and 4 seeds open at home in the quarterfinals.

Conrad Weiser (4-4), Hamburg, Fleetwood (2-6), and Kutztown (1-7) are out of the running for district berths but could snag a spot in the Eastern Conference. The EC playoff field is comprised of teams which don’t qualify for districts.
