Wyomissing extends streak to 23 with win over Kutztown

Drew Eisenhower ran for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass as Wyomissing raced past Kutztown 56-6 in a Berks Football League Section 2 game Friday at Kutztown.

The win was the 23rd straight in regular season play for the Spartans (4-0, 8-0), tied for fourth-longest in Berks history.

It also matched the winning streak of the Wyomissing Warriors, set from 1958-61.

The Spartans led 42-6 at the halftime in beating the Cougars (0-4, 2-6) for the 37th straight season.

Eisenhower scored on a 14-yard run and 10-yard pass from Ben Zechman. Zechman also connected on a 30-yard scoring pass to Nevin Carter.

Ja-mhi Jackson scored on runs of 4 and 6 yards for Wyomissing.

Ian Levering was good on all eight extra-point attempts.

The Spartans also got rushing touchdowns from Collin Niedrowski, Ryker Jones and Matt Kramer.

Kutztown was limited to 50 rushing yards on 36 attempts. Lennon Neiman, who topped the 1,000-yard mark last week and was averaging 9.1 yards per carry, was held to 26 yards on 14 carries.

Quarterback Jake Lafferty scored the Cougars’ touchdown, on a 3-yard run. He completed 4-of-19 passes and was picked off once.

While Wyomissing High and Wyomissing Area are considered separate programs, because of the merger between Wyomissing High and West Reading that former Wyomissing Area, winning streak remains a significant achievement.

The Warriors won 23 straight during an era when there were no postseason games.
