Wyomissing, Exeter brace for state-ranked opponents in regular season finales

Wyomissing and Exeter remain at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the PennLive.com state rankings as they head into season-ending heavyweight match-ups.

The Spartans, No. 1 in Class 3A, close the regular season Saturday at home against Lampeter-Strasburg, ranked No. 8 in Class 4A. They’ll decide the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 4 title.

The Eagles, No. 2 in Class 5A, finish Friday night at Manheim Central, ranked No. 6 in Class 4A. They’ll decide the L-L Section 2 title.

They are among the biggest Week 10 games in the state. Some others:

In the Philadelphia Catholic League St. Joseph’s Prep, ranked No. 1 in 6A, faces Roman Catholic, No. 5 in 5A.

In the WPIAL Aliquippa, ranked No. 1 in 4A, plays Central Valley, ranked No. 4 in 4A. Central Valley won the last two PIAA Class 3A titles, each against Wyomissing.

Also in the WPIAL, Elizabeth Forward, ranked No. 3 in 3A, plays Belle Vernon, No. 4 in 3A. Belle Vernon opened the season at No. 1 before a Week 3 loss to McKeesport. Wyomissing moved into No. 1 the following week.

In District 1 unbeaten Pople John Paul II, No. 7 in Class 4A, closes against 6A Perkiomen Valley, which is 8-1.

Overall, there were few changes in the weekly rankings as all the top-ranked teams continued to win.

One slight change shows Coatesville, ranked No. 4 in 6A, with a loss. It has forfeited a Week 7 win over West Chester Rustin due to use of an ineligible player. The Red Raiders won the game 38-7. The incident was self-reported.

Coatesville, one of just two unbeaten Class 6A teams in District 1, slipped to No. 5 in the district power rankings due to the forfeit. Rustin improved to 7-1 and is No. 3 in the Class 5A rankings.
