Wilson’s Nate Capitano is Body Zone Physical Therapy Defensive Player of the Week

Nate Capitano got a chance to start several games at defensive back early in his junior season, filling in for injured seniors.

That on-field experience, against some tough opponents, has been vital this season as he’s stepped into a leading role on Wilson’s defense and with its special teams.

“Right now, he’s there mentally and physically,” said Bulldogs coach Doug Dahms. “He’s playing well.”

Capitano made six tackles and intercepted a pass in Wilson’s 17-10 win over Central Dauphin to earn Body Zone Physical Therapy Defensive Player of the Week honors for the first time.

The Bulldogs defense allowed just 201 total yards in recording its first win this season.

Capitano, a 6-foot, 180-pound senior, was right in the middle of it from his spot at strong safety.

He’s part of a secondary, along with cornerbacks Cam Jones and Rafael Fernandez and free safety Edison Case, that allowed just 61 passing yards.

“He’s coming up (on the run),” said Dahms. “He’s not afraid to hit. He’s reading better and reacting well. He worked hard in the offseason, added strength, got himself in shape.”

Capitano is also a key to the Bulldogs’ usually strong special teams. He plays one of the gunner spots on punt coverage. That position requires speed and the ability to make open-field tackles. He also covers the opposing gunner on punt returns and is on both the kickoff coverage and return units.

“Nate has made great strides this year and has not only become a team leader but is a very physical D-back playing tight coverage,” Dahms said.

Capitano also had an interception in the Bulldogs’ season-opener against Roman Catholic. He shares the early Berks lead with two interceptions.
