The Wilson Bulldogs won’t be idle this week, after all.

Roughly 24 hours after learning its game against Martin Luther King had been canceled, Wilson has agreed to play Cheltenham in a non-league game Saturday at 6 at Gurski Stadium.

Cheltenham was scheduled to play a Friday night home game against Abraham Lincoln but the Philadelphia School District suspended all athletic competition on Wednesday, leaving the Panthers, Bulldogs and several other schools without an opponent.

The Panthers are 0-1 after falling to Chester 22-20 last week. They finished 6-4 last season.

Wilson slipped to 0-2 last week after Central Dauphin went for two in overtime and converted for a 36-35 win.

This will be the first meeting between the two programs.

The Bulldogs had been scheduled to play Martin Luther King (1-1) Friday at 7 at the Germantown Supersite. That game was canceled.

Due to extreme heat all practices and games for all sports for Philadelphia Public League were suspended Wednesday.

An open date could have hurt Wilson’s power rating for the District 3 playoffs. A win over Cheltenham, a Class 6A school, will enhance it.

Wilson opens Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 1 play next week against Reading High, at Gurski Stadium.
