Wilson’s Cameron Jones is Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week

Cameron Jones brings the special to special teams.

The Wilson junior is having an unprecedented season, with six touchdowns off kick returns over eight games, the two most recent in Friday’s 49-24 win at Cedar Crest.

“Every time he touches it, I (think): ‘He’s gonna take this one to the house,’ ” said Bulldogs quarterback Brad Hoffman. “His speed burst is crazy.”

Jones returned a punt 69 and a kickoff 91 yards, and also scored on a 3-yard run to earn Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week.

He carried twice for 14 yards and had a reception.

The 5-11, 165-pounder is also a play-maker at cornerback but his biggest impact for the Bulldogs this season has come as a kick returner. His four punt return TDs have matched a program record. His nine TDs are second on the team; his brother Jadyn leads with 10.

“He’s a big part of why we’re winning these games,” Wilson coach Doug Dahms said after a third straight win lifted the Bulldogs into sole possession of first place in Section 1 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League.

Jones’ first return Friday was a highlight reel special. He shrugged off the tackler after wrapping up the ball, reversed course and burst up the sideline. He went 69 yards for the game’s opening score.

“Our blocking team is really good,” Jones said. “The potential that we have is just amazing. Our guys are really buying into the special teams this year. They know it’s a really big game-changer for us.”

“Cam is very serious about the game and is mentally ready in all three phases to excel,” Dahms said. “He really sets up his blocks on returns and has the patience to let them develop, and then explodes through the seams.”

Jones has taken a kick all the way back in four consecutive games, which could be some kind of record. He had a 51-yard punt return in Week 7 vs. McCaskey, a 70-yard punt return the week before vs. Penn Manor and an 85-yard kickoff return vs. Manheim Central in Week 5. Wilson’s first score of the season came on Jones’ 70-yard punt return vs. Central Dauphin.

Jones is the first Wilson player to earn a MikeDragoSports.com Player of the Week award this season.
