Cam Jones once again Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week

Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week

Cam Jones was the Lancaster-Lebanon League’s only four-way all-league a pick a year ago, earning recognition as a defensive back, kick returner, wide receiver and at Athlete, as well as Defensive Back of the Year in Section 1.

More big things are on the way for the Wilson senior. He’ll be a top candidate for Offensive Player of the Year, too, after another huge performance in a big Section 1 showdown Friday.

The Holy Cross recruit ran 24 times for a career-high 248 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-21 win at Manheim Township to earn Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week.

Jones had a long run to open Wilson’s late game-winning drive and scored on a 6-yard run with 5:18 left to snap a 21-21 tie. Earlier he was credited with a touchdown pass when he lined up as the Wildcat quarterback in a goal-line situation and tossed a shovel pass to Nick Weitzel.

“He’s a heck of a ballplayer, a heck of an athlete,” said Township head coach Mark Evans said.

The elusive Jones is a tough cat to bring down, especially in the open field where he excels as a punt returner.

Jones set a program — and most certainly a Berks County — record last season by returning seven kicks for touchdowns: Four punts and three kickoffs.

He’s set another this season with five punt returns for touchdowns.

Township didn’t punt to Jones Friday but it couldn’t keep the ball out of his hands when he lined up as a tailback and it couldn’t stop him once he got the ball.

“There were times our guys were in the right position (to stop him),” said Evans, “we just didn’t execute.”

Jones leads Section 1 backs in rushing with 965 rushing yards; his 9.5 yards-per-carry average is better than any of the league’s 1,000-yards rushers, except for Hamburg’s Pierce Mason (11.0).

He leads Section 1 with 25 touchdowns.

“I just use my blockers as best as I can,” Jones said. “That’s the name of the game.”

This is Jones’ third selection this season as Offensive Player of the Week. He was picked following a Week 2 win over Central Dauphin when he ran for 122 yards and after a Week 6 win over Gov. Mifflin when he ran for 139 yards, two TDs and a two-point conversion.

He was selected twice last season, mostly because of his kick return ability, and was also selected once last season as Defensive Player of the Week.

Jones began the year as a wide receiver but stepped into tailback spot in Week 2 due to an injury to Cleveland Harding.

As a junior Jones was a dominant force and on his way to becoming one of the most versatile and talented players in program history. He earned All-State honors on the Pennsylvania Football Writers Class 6A All-State team and was an All-Berks pick at defensive back.
