Wilson ousted from district tournament on last-second shot

Cumberland Valley’s Dylan Levis ended Wilson’s season with a 3-pointer in the final second Friday, sending the second-seeded Eagles over the ninth-seeded Bulldogs 44-41 at Mechanicsburg in a PIAA Class 6A state qualifier.

The Bulldogs (15-11) ended the season with three straight losses after taking out No. 8 Waynesboro in the opening round of the district tournament.

The Eagles (19-7) earned the seventh and final seed out of District 3 for the upcoming PIAA Class 6A Tournament.

The Bulldogs rallied from an early eight-point deficit to tie the game at 41-41 late in the fourth quarter. The Eagles held the ball for over two minutes at the end before Levis connected with 1.3 seconds left. He had just one basket before that.

Freshman Madyx Gruber led Wilson with nine points. Ofure Odiale scored nine. Cameron Jones finished with seven points after a scoreless first half.

Grant Kuffa scored a game-high 15 points for Cumberland Valley.

Wilson trailed 25-20 at the half and 33-29 after three quarters.

In other Class 6A seeding games Friday, No. 3 Central Dauphin defeated No. 5 Cedar Cliff 54-50 to take third place and No. 4 Hempfield defeated No. 6 Chambersburg 49-57 to take fifth place.

No. 1 Reading High plays No. 7 Warwick in the championship game Saturday at 7:45 at Giant Center.

The Bulldogs were 14-5 a month ago after knocking off District 1 power Methacton 60-56 in overtime but faded after that. They lost six of their final seven games, including a Berks Conference quarterfinal to Exeter.
