Wilson, Gov. Mifflin and Fleetwood will try to make a little more baseball history Thursday when they play quarterfinal games in the PIAA Tournament.

The Bulldogs (20-7) advanced in Class 6A with a 2-0 win over North Allegheny. They will play District 1 runner-up Downingtown West (19-5) at Villanova Ballpark in Plymouth-Meeting at noon.

The Mustangs (21-5) beat Frankford 7-2 in Class 5A. They will play District 11 champ Whitehall (15-9) at Kutztown Park at 4:30. (It was orginally scheduled for Methacton High School at 4).

The Tigers (16-10) held off North Catholic 3-2 in Class 4A. They will play District 7 third-place Montour (18-8) at Bellefonte at 4.

Wilson got a one-hitter from ace Matt VanOstenbridge and a two-run single from Christo Hunsicker in the top of the seventh to earn its first state playoff win since 2019.

Gov. Mifflin got a complete game and a home run from Bryce Detwiler as it recorded the first PIAA Tournament victory in program history. The Mustangs had been 0-4 in state play.

Fleetwood got another complete game from Liam Hilburt as it won its first state tournament game in 16 years. He allowed just five hits and did not walk a batter in improving to 9-1.

Overall, three Berks teams won opening-round games in the state tournament for the first time since 2011.
