PLYMOUTH MEETING — Wilson took another step forward Friday night, a first-year quarterback took another step forward of his own, and the defensive unit came up big at key moments in a 27-7 non-league win over Plymouth- Whitemarsh.

It was Wilson’s second consecutive win to open the season and another step in the maturation of quarterback Mason Young, who was making his second varsity start. The senior was 11-of-17 through the air for 166 yards and two scores.

He said watching from the sideline the past two seasons helped prepare him.

“I think sitting behind Tommy Hunsicker and Madyx Gruber, sitting behind them and learning the offense, it was great to sit behind and learn from (them) and I can use that in my senior year,” Young said.

Young says he’s enjoyed building a rapport with his offensive line.

“They did a great job tonight,” he said. “It’s just putting trust into those guys, I’ve trusted them every week, and just trusting my receivers that they’re going to get open.”

The Colonials (0-2) had possession for nearly 18-and-a-half minutes in the first half but trailed 13-0 going to the locker room thanks to some big plays by the Wilson defense.

Whitemarsh marched 55 yards on its second possession to reach the Wilson 20-yard line before the Bulldogs made a third-down stand that served as a prelude to Jaden Carpenter’s blocking Max Peterson’s 42-yard field-goal bid.

Four plays later, Carpenter was wide open on a bubble screen in the left flat, and 45 yards later Wilson had a 6-0 lead with 9:18 left in the first half.

Just three plays after that it was EJ Brownback’s turn when he stepped in front of a Cole Reilly throw and covered 40 yards en route to the end zone to put his team up two scores with 8:09 left in the half.

“Setting the tone is one of the biggest parts of our defense,” Brownback said. “If we can step on them early and impose our will against them, it definitely demoralizes an offense and makes the game a lot easier for us.”

Plymouth-Whitemarsh got a big night from fullback Mike Giangiulio, who ran for 129 yards.

“Give him credit,” said Wilson coach Doug Dahms. “He ran tough. We had the ball (five-and-a-half) minutes in the first half. But when it came down to it and we had our backs against the wall we came up big and made some plays.”

Wilson extended its lead by taking the second-half kickoff and driving 68 yards. Chase Herb extended the drive by completing a pass to Ethan Harding on a fake punt from the Colonial 44-yard line. Young found Mike Glover on a 28-yard connection with 8:56 left in the third quarter to make it 20-0.

Correll Akings added a 43-yard burst on Wilson’s next drive.

Giangiulio scored the Colonials only touchdown 31 seconds into the fourth quarter.
