When it comes to the “student” part of student-athlete, Stevie Mitchell scores at every level.
The Wilson grad and Marquette junior has been named to the Academic All-America team by the College Sports Communicators.
Mitchell has a 3.96 grade point average, tied for second-highest among the 15 Division I players selected for the team.
He’s not taking “cake” classes, either. Mitchell is a Finance & Information Systems major.
He’s joined on the prestigious list by teammate Oso Ighodaro, a second-team pick who is majoring in Finance; Mitchell is listed on the third team.
Marquette is one of only two teams with two selections, along with Stanford.
NCAA champ Connecticut has one player on the team, Cam Spencer. He is among nine grad students selected. Mitchell is one of just four underclassmen.
Mitchell scored on the court as well, averaging 8.8 points in his 33 starts for the Golden Warriors, who finished 27-10 overall and reached the NCAA quarterfinals before being eliminated by N.C. State. They finished second in the Big East.
Mitchell, considered Marquette’s defensive stopper, was second on the team in shooting percentage (51.6), second in free throw shooting (76.6) and third in rebounds (4.1 per game).
He had a season-high 16 points against Western Kentucky and a season-high nine rebounds against UConn, the Big East champ.
Stevie’s brother Kyran, a Berks Catholic graduate and grad student playing at Elmhurst University, earned academic all-district honors this season.
Guard Max Abmas from the University of Texas, guard Erik Timko of Thomas Jefferson University, guard Cael Schmitt of Coe College and guard Jonathan Brown of the University of the Cumberlands lead the Academic All-America teams by being named as the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for NCAA Divisions I, II and III, as well as the NAIA, respectively.
Two student-athletes are repeat selections on the Academic All-America: Cory Ainsworth (Cornerstone University) and Drew Wyman (College of Idaho).
