What to expect in Section 4 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League this season

2025 Berks football coverage presented by

Utilities Employees Credit Union

Lampeter-Strasburg, Twin Valley, and Wyomissing didn’t just battle for the top spot in Section 4 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League last season, they battled for space in the state rankings.

Projection
1.Wyomissing
2.Twin Valley
3.Lampeter-Strasburg
4.Elco
5.Octorara
6.Northern Lebanon
7.Daniel Boone
8.Donegal

For much of the season, the Pioneers, Raiders, and Spartans were all ranked in the Top Ten in Class 4A; Lampeter and Wyomissing ended up there, with the former reaching the PIAA championship game. That trio went 28-2 against outside competition.

Expect another battle royale this season between these premier programs. The Pioneers took some big graduation hits but they also did the year before and still ended up winning 14 games.

The Spartans get the early nod as favorite in this section; they could be better than year ago, when they reached the district title game. The Raiders, with the return of dymanic Drew Engle, could be better, too.

There’s a wide gap between those three and the rest of the section, as you might suspect. Here’s an early team-by-team glance at how the seven teams stack up.

Check back early next month for more-detailed breakdowns of Daniel Boone, Twin Valley, Wyomissing, and all the Berks County teams.

What to expect in Section 1 this season

What to expect in Section 2 this season

What to expect in Section 3 this season

Wyomissing Spartans

Danny Fleischood
(PhilMarPhoto)
  • Classification: 4A.
  • Coach: Bob Wolfrum, 39th season, 372-92-1.
  • Last season: 6-1 Section 4, 10-3 overall.
  • 2024 postseason: Beat East Pennsboro and West York before falling to Lampeter-Strasburg 30-27 in overtime in the District 3 Class 4A championship game.
  • Need to replace: RB/S Derek Macrina, second-team all-league C Francisco Fabian, all-league G and DE Max Tipton, OT Caleb Beane, second-team all-league OT and DT Keaton Piacine, G/C Ayden Jimenez, NG Jordan Gwynn.
  • Who’s back: QB/S Brady Eisenhower, QB/S Teddy White, all-league FB and LB Chase Eisenhower (784 rushing yards, 13 TDs), RB and Section 4 Defensive Back of the Year Justice Hardy (9.3 yards per carry, 15 TDs), RB and all-league LB Tyler Niedrowski, RB/CB Danny Fleischood, FB/LB Zander Westwood, TE/LB Diamante Strong, C Robert Martino, G Jossian Lopez-Sanchez, G Jack Bennethum, OT/LB Andrew Bresnahan, OT Parker Laferriere, DT Khaliel Rivera, S Daniel Delp, CB Marcus Armistead, all-league P and second-team all-league PK Keegan Maher.
  • Key early game: Season-opener vs. 14-time PIAA champion Southern Columbia; doesn’t get any better than that.
  • Outlook: The Spartans return 11 all-league picks from a team that played for a district championship and ended the season ranked No. 5 in the state. They’ll be even better this season, especially at QB where Brady Eisenhower returns from injury incumbent starter Teddy White will battle. The kicking game will again be great and Justice Hardy figures to be more dominant than he was as an All-State sophomore.

Twin Valley Raiders

Joey Buckley
  • Classification: 4A.
  • Coach: Brett Myers, fourth season, 26-10 (111-77 overall, including six seasons at Pottstown and eight seasons at Middletown.)
  • Last season: 5-2 Section 4, 9-3 overall.
  • 2024 postseason: Beat Susquehanna Township 47-19 before falling to eventual champ Lampeter-Strasburg 31-13 in District 3 Class 4A semifinal.
  • Need to replace: QB and All-State pick Evan Myers, all-league RB and DB Evan Johnson, all-league WR Matt Knight, Section 4 Outstanding Lineman Carter Faubel, all-league OT Aris Drake.
  • Who’s back: QB/FS Maverik Foster, QB and second-team all-league LB Grant Moser, RB/DB Drew Engle, RB and second-team all-league LB Lucas Myers, Section 4 Receiver of the Year Ben Grundy (43 receptions, 526 yards, 7 TDs), WR/CB Chase Reilly, TE/S Jayce Oliver, C Noah DiGiacomo, second-team all-league G and all-league DE Greyson Miller, G/OT/DT Joey Buckley, OT Andrew Boswell, second-team all-league NG Mark Minardi, CB James Alexy, PK Nate Schaffer.
  • Key early game: Should get a bigger test in Week 1 vs. Berks Catholic than a year ago, when they led Saints 42-3 in the third quarter.
  • Outlook: Not many programs can be better after graduating their all-time passing leader, all-time touchdowns leader, the section’s Outstanding Lineman, and another lineman headed to a Division I program, but the Raiders might be in that position. Sure, they need to replace seven all-league picks but they might have more overall team speed and strength than a year ago, when they spent three weeks ranked No. 1 in the state. Plus, they’ll have a full season from Drew Engle, one of the most dynamic players in the 37-team Lancaster-Lebanon League.

Lampeter-Strasburg Pioneers

Thad Wolf
(LNP photo)
  • Classification: 4A.
  • Coach: Victor Ridenour, fifth season, 43-9.
  • Last season: 7-0 Section 4 champ, 14-1 overall.
  • 2024 postseason: Beat Wyomissing 30-27 in OT to win District 3 Class 4A championship, advanced to PIAA title game vs. Bonner-Prendergast before suffering first loss.
  • Need to replace: QB/S and Section 4 Outstanding Back Caileb Howse, all-league RB Dominick Brown, all-league WR and LB Danny Weichler, all-league TE and Section 4 Linebacker of the Year LB Emory Fluhr, all-league C Carson Zook, all-league G Hudson Crutchfield, all-league DE Jai Steberger, all-league DB Christian Nolt.
  • Who’s back: QB Asher Jones, RB Colby DeJessa, FB/LB Mitchell Swarr, FB/TE/LB Alex Salaki, TE/LB Keegan Curtis, WR Brady Chrstensen, all-league T and DT Collin Shelley, second-team all-league OT Thad Wolf, DB Cole Lopez, DB Angel Herr, All-State PK Peter Fiorelli.
  • Key early game: Pioneers find out right away what they’re up against as they open against Section 3 favorite Solanco.
  • Outlook: Pioneers graduated 16 starters and 10 all-league picks following the 2023 season and came back to win 14 games. There’s sure to be some kind of drop-off this season after losing 15 all-league picks but the question is: How far? Who comes up with those magical, game-saving plays like Caileb Howse? Competition is as fierce as ever at the top of Section 4 but no one believes L-S won’t be a factor.

Elco Raiders

Paul Williams
(Mark Palczewski/LNP photo)
  • Classification: 4A.
  • Coach: Bob Miller, 14th season, 70-63.
  • Last season: 4-3 Section 4, 6-6 overall.
  • 2024 postseason: Beat Octorara in opening round of District 3 4A Tournament before 42-7 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg in quarterfinals.
  • Need to replace: QB Steven Rosado, all-league WR Justin Smucker, C Tupac Vasquez-Disla, all-league DE Brady Stoops, all-league second-team DT Brayden Malloy, LB Mitchell Frederick, LB Gavin Bicher, DB Austin Yesko, second-team all-league DB Zane Trostle.
  • Who’s back: QB/LB Brinley Donmoyer, RB/LB Ellis Gensamer, RB/S Gavin Yeiser, WR/S Griffin Kreider, WR Kaden Tillison, TE/DE Dalton Pyszka, C Oliver Eberly, G Collin Carpenter, G/DT Cody Landis, OT and second-team all-league DE Paul Williams.
  • Key early game: Week 3 league opener vs. Lancaster Catholic, the Section 5 favorite, will be a litmus test for Raiders.
  • Outlook: Raiders will be depending on all-new backfield and receiving corps. There are capable replacements ready to step up, but on-the-job training in this treacherous section can be dangerous.

Octorara Braves

  • Classification: 4A.
  • Coach: Ed Smith, second season, 7-14.
  • Last season: 3-4 Section 4, 5-6 overall.
  • 2024 postseason: No. 9 seed lost at Elco 31-6 in opening round of districts.
  • Need to replace: QB/WR Collin Wood, RB and second-team all-league P Chandler Stoltzfus, second-team all-league RB Ian Teufert, RB Collin Mowday, WR Troy Shrader, C/DL Ben Eberhardt, NT Cion Brown,  DL Chase Tuel, second-team all-league LB Austin Kurtz.
  • Who’s back: QB/TE/ Mason Prokay, RB/S Brayden Mastrippolito, FB/LB Nate Dow, second-team all-league WR Mehkai Lambert, WR/S Brayden Remphrey, WR/LB Joey Mowday, TE/LB Logan Smith, C Lucas Reid, G/LB Josh Ross, OT/DE Shaun Myrick, OT/DE Sean Robinson.
  • Key early game: Braves get tested right away with Week 2 trip to Section 3 favorite Solanco.
  • Outlook: Braves enjoyed nice bounce-back season, improving from two wins to a spot in the District 3 Tournament – just the second appearance for the program. Need to replace QB, top rusher. Will again be tough sledding against the top-tier programs in this section.

Northern Lebanon Vikings

Bryan Mitzel
(Tim Macrina photo)
  • Classification: 4A.
  • Coach: Jason Rice, fifth season, 13-28.
  • Last season: 2-5 Section 4, 3-7 overall.
  • 2024 postseason: DNQ.
  • Need to replace: Second-team all-league RB Myles Watson, WR Brendan Ryan, OT Hayden Adams, OL/DL Eli Thompson, OL/DL Russell Beers.
  • Who’s back: QB/CB Bryan Mitzel, FB/S/PK/P Kael Erdman, RB/LB Christian Spencer, WR/S/KR Brady Ryan (15 receptions, 207 yards, 2 TDs), WR/CB Ryan Clemmer, WR/S Johnny Hilton, WR/LB Jaxin Bush, WR Ty Martin, TE/LB Bryce Yocum, C Landon Graby, G/DT Matthew Chernich, OT/DT Andrew Stohler,
  • Key early game: Critical to get a ‘W’ in the opener at Pine Grove because wins will tough to come once league play opens.
  • Outlook: Vikings are inexperienced across the board and thin along the lines but they have a wealth of promising receivers and hope the switch a Spread Wing offense will give them a chance to spread the field and get their best athletes in open spaces.

Daniel Boone Blazers

Maddox Roy
  • Classification: 5A.
  • Coach: J.D. Okuniewski, third season, 2-18.
  • Last season: 1-6 Section 4, 1-9 overall.
  • 2024 postseason: DNQ.
  • Need to replace: All-League WR and second-team all-league S Max Heffner, RB/LB Anthony High, second-team all-league WR Harrison Delissaint, OL/DL Jorge Pingarron, CB Darius Cruz, CB Blake Elliott, S Ryan Poore.
  • Who’s back: QB/RB/S Hayden Moyer (1,586 passing yards, 370 rushing yards), QB/LB Dominic Stoudt, RB/S Jaelen McKenzie, RB/LB Brad Floria, FB Jayger Hrdlicka, WR/CB Malachi Rowe, WR/CB Josh McIntyre, TE/DE Tiegan Rickard, TE/LB Jayden Salata, C/DL Trent Lenker, G Jabrae Pratt, G Trent Lenker, G Timmy Kretzmen, OT/DE Maddox Roy, OT/DE Grant Pingatore, DT Jayden Crippen.
  • Key early game: Season opens with “Pig Iron Bowl” vs. Exeter; it doesn’t get any bigger than that in Birdsboro.
  • Outlook: Blazers return four-fifths of their offensive line and QB Haydn Moyer, one of the more dynamic play-makers in the section. However, he’s got new skills components around him in the run and passing games. The vibes were all positive during the offseason but they’ve got a lot of ground to make up in this top-heavy section.

Donegal Indians

Leeland Baughman
(Logan Gehman/LNP photo)
  • Classification: 4A
  • Coach: Anthony Sottasante, third season, 4-16.
  • Last season: 0-7 Section 4, 1-9 overall.
  • 2024 postseason: DNQ.
  • Need to replace: RB Quinn Weymers, RB DeAndre White, RB/LB Cayden Leaf, WR/FS Chase Gerz, WR/CB Uri Alkinburgh, G/DT Brady Allessie, OT/DT Hunter Parduski, OT/DT Matt Crider, LB Vinnie Coco.
  • Who’s back: QB Chase Marshall (346 passing yards, 3 TDs), RB/S Leland Baughman (685 rushing yards, 6 TDs), RB/LB Jack Tompkins, RB/LB Colton Houck, RB/LB Logan Smith, RB/CB Jalil Johnson, CB and second-team all-league WR Angel Mendez (19 receptions), WR/CB Jacir Johnson, C/NG Owen Winters, OL Cole Farley, OL Dawson St. Victor, OL/DL Joe Schober, OL/NG Zach Greider, OL/DT Parker Foye.
  • Key early games: Soft non-league schedule, against Middletown, Columbia, and West York, gives Indians a chance for some early success.
  • Outlook: Indians didn’t display the depth or conditioning to compete with the top teams in this section. By midseason they were decimated by injuries, then dropped some close games late in the season. They return their top QB, ballcarrier, and receiver, so they could have a bounce-back season if they gain some strength and build depth in the offseason.
