MANHEIM — For most of Friday’s contest between Conrad Weiser and Manheim Central, those who were following along online must have thought they were seeing updates on a baseball or soccer game.

The only score in the first half at Elden Rettew Stadium in this Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 3 game was a safety against the Scouts.

That set the tone for the whole night, one in which Manheim Central grabbed a wacky 20-7 victory over Conrad Weiser.

After a tremendous punt by Manheim Central’s Carter Kyle, Conrad Weiser (1-1, 4-1) was pinned at its own 1-yard line, risking a safety.

On third down Weiser quarterback Connor Sellars was met with intense pressure from the Barons’ pass rush and was forced to throw the ball away. The Scouts were charged with both intentional grounding and facemask penalties. Manheim accepted the latter.

“Playbook gets smaller as you get down on your own 3, 4 and 1-yard line,” Weiser coach Alan Moyer said. “That’s how important special teams are.”

The special teams woes continued in the second half for the Scouts. Manheim’s Xavier Oxceva returned a punt 52 yards for a score early in the third quarter. Weiser was also charged with eight penalties for 31 yards.

“Sloppy,” Moyer said. “We haven’t been real clean since Week 1, and we found ways to win despite that. Those things are going to come back and bite you.”

The loss snapped Conrad Weiser’s 14-game unbeaten streak in regular season play.

“Undisciplined teams don’t usually do too well, so we’ve got to clean things up, Moyer said. “Have a short-term memory and get ready for next week.”

The Scouts only ran three offensive plays in the first quarter and only one short of a dozen before halftime, picking up just one fresh set of downs.

“There’s not a lot of plays for first-and-20,” Moyer said. “When you get behind the sticks like that, it makes it difficult for the offense to get on any type of rhythm.”

After the Barons (1-0, 3-2) scored on a 31-yard trick-play touchdown pass, Conrad Weiser did find some momentum offensively. On a drive that ate up six minutes with five first downs, Javien Rivera tumbled into the end zone for a 2-yard score.

Manheim was limited to 72 yards of total offense in the first half. With the Barons starting drives on Weiser’s side of the field, most defenses would have struggled to keep points off the board. The Scouts didn’t.

“Our defense, man, they played lights out for a while,” Moyer said. “I’m very pleased with the defensive performance. We’ve got to get some offense moving.”

The Scouts knew it was going to be tough after graduating 20 seniors, a dozen of which were all-league players. Their first trip-up in Section 3 play isn’t likely to be their last.

Section 3 is incredibly competitive. Just about every team in it could make a reasonable case for standing on the mountain top by the end of the season. There will be no weeks off.

“You better be ready every night in Section 3,” Moyer said. “There’s no gimmies. You’ve got to come out and you got to fight tooth-and-nail… every week’s going to be a dog fight.”
