Week 3 Spotlight Game: Gov. Mifflin at Cocalico

Gov. Mifflin (2-0) vs. Cocalico (1-1)

Kick: Friday, 7, at Eagle Stadium, Denver.

Series: Mustangs lead 9-7.

Last meeting: Cocalico won 42-14 in a 2019 District 3 Class 5A quarterfinal as All-State QB Noah Palm ran for four TDs. The Eagles led 28-0 at the half and 35-0 before the Mustangs go on the board on a 1-yard TD run by sophomore Nick Singleton. Singleton was limited to 21 yards on 13 carries.

Cocalico went on to win the district championship; following the season head coach Dave Gingrich resigned, after 16 seasons and 130 victories.

About the Mustangs: Ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 5A and coming off a pair of mercy-rule victories over top Class 6A programs, 55-6 over York High and 42-14 over Wilson.

Got big efforts on defense last week from LB Trey Rock, who had 8 tackles, 2 sacks and a forced fumble; LB Braylon Stewart, who had 8 tackles; LB Jordan Kershner, who had 8 tackles and a sack; freshman LB Mykell Ford, who had a sack and forced fumble; and S Eden Johnson, who earned Body Zone Physical Therapy Defensive Player of the Week honors.

Nick Singleton ran for 137 yards and scored three TDs vs. Wilson. His 32-yard run, early in the final quarter, was his 80th career touchdown, giving him the Berks record. The score before that — an 8-yard run in the third quarter — gave him the Berks all-time record for points (he now has 484, 10 more than the previous mark).

About the Eagles: Return 18 starters, including All-State offensive lineman Ryan Brubaker, a South Carolina commit and the son of former Wilson offensive line coach Jeff Brubaker (he plays guard now but will move to tackle in college).

Opened season with 36-21 win over Conrad Weiser as Anthony Bourassa ran for 206 yards and 3 TDs; offense totaled 413 yards.

Bourassa had another big game last week, going for 183 yards and 3 TDs but Cedar Cliff scored in the final minute for a 33-27 win. Colts QB Ethan Dorrel completed 18-of-26 passes for 236 and 3 TDs and ran for the game-winner.

Bryan Strohl is in his second season as head coach after 15 seasons as an assistant.

Finished 4-4 last season.

Did you know? Cocalico has won four straight games in the series, including twice in 2019, when they won 26-14 in the regular season before a mercy-rule win in the playoffs.

Fast fact: In three games vs. Cocalico Nick Singleton has rushed for 274 yards on 51 carries, with 3 TDs. As a freshman he returned a kickoff 92 yards for a TD and rushed for 148 yards.
