Hamburg’s Amelia Gassert scored 14 points across two games as the Hawks flipped their season trajectory around to go undefeated last week. She has earned Utilities Employees Credit Union Player of the Week honors.
Gassert scored eight points in a 48-30 non-league win over Schuylkill Haven Tuesday and six points in a 33-32 Berks League Division III victory over Fleetwood Friday.
Hamburg was one of four teams to have an undefeated week, along with Berks Catholic, Oley Valley, and Wyomissing.
The scoring numbers might not be gaudy — Gassert is averaging 4.1 points per game — but it’s the little things she does so well that have helped the Hawks move into second place in Berks III and win back-to-back games after a 2-7 start.
“Amelia is the definition of a hard worker,” Hamburg head coach Amanda York said. “She does all of the little things that might not all show up in the stats.”
The sophomore can play guard or forward and is the Hawks’ best rebounder, averaging about seven per game. Gassert creates open looks for teammates through setting hard screens and attacking the rim before kicking out for open shots.

She’s the perfect cog in a Hamburg team that likes to muck it up; the Hawks allowing only 38 points per game, third-fewest in the league.
“She is one of our best defenders who usually guards the other team’s best player,” York said. “ ‘Mia’ always does her best and outhustles many people.”
Fleetwood senior and Kansas State commit Alexis Hess was held to 12 points, her second-lowest total of the season, in the Hawks’ win Friday.
The next step for Hamburg will be ramping up an offense that is producing 30.3 points per game.
Gassert is the first Hamburg player to earn Utilities Employees Credit Union Player of the Week honors.
