After another big week in Hamburg’s 41-34 win over Northern Lebanon junior quarterback Tyler Shuey remains in position to breaks Berks’ all-time passing record.

Shuey has thrown for 2,419 yards in nine games, tops in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. That’s 550 away from the Berks record of 2,969, set by Daniel Boone’s Jon Monteiro in 2008.

Before last week Monteiro was the only Berks passer to top 2,000 yards in the regular season. He threw for 2,575 in 10 games.

Shuey can top that with 157 yards Friday against Columbia in the Hawks’ regular season finale.

Hamburg appears in line to get an 11th game. The Hawks (5-4) are unlikely to make the District 3 Class 3A field but are in strong position to earn a berth in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Shuey needs 551 yards to top Monteiro’s record. That’s an average of 275.5 yards over two game. He has averaged 269 yards in the first nine weeks.

Shuey, a first-year starter, opened the season with three straight 300-yard games – a feat never before accomplished in Berks football.

He has thrown for 200 or more yards eight times; his season-low of 194 came in a Week 4 loss to Annville-Cleona.

He has thrown a touchdown pass in eight of nine games and has a program-record 21, topping the mark of 16 set last season by Xander Menapace.

Shuey’s 258 attempts are a program single-season record, topping the mark of 238 by Menapace last season. He needs nine completions to top Menapace’s single-season record of 151.

Menapace set the program passing record with 1,833 passing yards last season.

Shuey’s 347 yards in a Week 3 win over Fairfield are second-most in program history. Matt Deibler set the record with 416 yards in a 1998 victory over Schuylkill Valley. Shuey and Deiber are the only Hamburg passers to top 300 yards in a game.

Shuey’s current passing efficiency rating of 154.8 is just above Menapace’s program record of 153.5, set in 2021.

This has been a remarkable year for passers in the league. Three more could top 2,000 yards this week and several more could reach that milestone during the playoffs.

Manheim Central’s Zac Hahn is second in the league in passing yards with 1,998. He’s tied for second with 29 TD passes.

Manheim Township’s Hayden Johnson is having an unprecedented season. He has thrown for 1,958 yards and attempted 158 passes without throwing an interception. He has a league-leading 35 touchdown passes.

Wilson’s Tommy Hunsicker is fourth in the league with 1,855 passing yards and fifth with 20 TDs.

Hempfield’s Jackson Landis (1,783), Schuylkill Valley’s Logan Nawrocki (1,637), Garden Spot’s Kye Harting (1,622) and Ephrata’s Sam McCracken  (1,605) also have a good chance to top 2,000 yards.
