Berks-Lebanon squad well-armed for Tri-County clash vs. Lancaster All-Stars

All-State picks Evan Myers of Twin Valley, Luke Spotts and Logan Nawrocki of Schuylkill Valley, and Jonathan Shay of Annville-Cleona will be the headliners for the Berks-Lebanon squad as it takes on Lancaster County’s top seniors in the 23rd annual Tri-County All-Star Game.

Kickoff is Friday, May 23 at 7 at Manheim Central’s Rettew Stadium.

Myers, a four-year starter at quarterback for the Raiders, is one of five Twin Valley players named to the 36-player Berks-Lebanon squad. Twin Valley’s Brett Myers will be the head coach.

Conrad Weiser, the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 3 champ, also has five players on the Berks-Lebanon roster, including the all-league pass-catch combination of quarterback Donovan Gingrich and Evan Rittle.

The Berks-Lebanon squad, which hasn’t scored in the past two games, is certainly deep at quarterback. Myers, Nawrocki, and Gingrich combined to throw for more than 14,000 yards and nearly 150 touchdowns in their high school careers.

They’ll have strong targets to throw to in Rittle, the Section 3 Receiver of the Year; Exeter’s Carter Redding, the Section 2 Receiver of the Year; and Spotts, a tight end who led the league with 60 receptions and 975 receiving yards.

The Berks-Lebanon roster includes players from 11 Berks County teams and five Lebanon County teams.

Cedar Crest, Fleetwood, Hamburg, and Kutztown are not represented on the roster.

Lancaster again presents a star-studded roster, with eight All-State picks, including Caileb Howse, Dominic Brown, and Emory Fluhr, who led Lampeter-Strasburg to the PIAA Class 5A championship game, and Manheim Township’s Declan Clancy, the Outstanding Back and co-Offensive Back of the Year in Section 1.

Dave Hahn of Manheim Central is Lancaster’s head coach.

Donovan Gingrich, left, and Evan Rittle of Conrad Weiser.

A number of top Berks and Lebanon players are not available to play in the game due to spring sports, injuries, or other commitments. Some top college programs don’t allow their recruits to play in all-star games such as this, for fear of injury, or because they want them on campus for the spring term or early in the summer.

The Berks-Lebanon team is without Exeter’s Logan Wegman, a Navy recruit, All-State pick and the Outstanding Lineman and Offensive Lineman of the Year in Section 2. He’s one of the top throwers in the state and chasing a PIAA championship in the shot put.

Also missing from the roster are All-State picks Madyx Gruber of Wilson; the Outstanding Back in Section 1; Jayden Zandier, Exeter’s record-setting tailback; and Twin Valley’s Carter Faubel, the Outstanding Lineman in Section 4.

This is the third year for the Lancaster vs. Berks-Lebanon format. The Tri-County Game had previously been a North/South format before 13 Berks teams joined the league for the 2022 season.

The shorthanded Berks-Lebanon team was overwhelmed in last year’s game, yielding long touchdown strikes on the first two possessions of the game en route to a 35-0 loss.

In 2023 the game was stopped at halftime due to a medical emergency in the stands; Lancaster was leading 14-0 when the game was suspended.
